CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's personal intervention for a firm action to put an end to Sri Lankan Navy's firing on Indian fishermen.

In a telegram to the Prime Minister, Karunanidhi said the atrocities of Sri Lankan Navy on the fishermen were continuing unabated despite repeated assurances given by the Centre and Sri Lankan governments that such incidents would not recur.

Drawing the attention of Prime Minister on the killing of a fisherman from Nagapattinam who was fishing in the Palk Straits yesterday, Karunanidhi said the incident should be taken up with the Sri Lankan Government for im

India summons Lanka High Commissioner over fisherman shooting incident

The External Affiars ministry has summoned Sri Lankan High Commissioner Prasad Kariyawasam asking for an explanation on the fisherman shooting incident.

Reacting strongly to the killing of an Indian fisherman in firing by the Sri Lankan Navy, India today said such incidents have no "justification" and called on the authorities there to "desist" from use of force.

In a fresh incident of attack on Tamil Nadu fishermen in Palk Straits, one person was killed when Sri Lankan Navy allegedly opened fire at three fishermen, who put out to sea from Jagadapattinnam near Pudukottai yesterday.

"We have received reports of the death of an Indian fisherman due to firing by Sri Lankan Navy personnel. Our High Commissioner in Colombo has immediately taken up this matter with the Sri Lankan Government and expressed our deep concern and regret at this incident.

"We have emphasised that resort to firing in these situations has no justification and called on the Sri Lankan authorities to desist from use of force," a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said here.

It said the welfare and the safety of Indian fishermen in the waters between India and Sri Lanka have received very high priority by the government.

"We have consistently emphasised to the Sri Lankan government to refrain from firing on our fishermen and scrupulously adhere to the October 2008 understanding reached between the two governments. We call on the Sri Lankan Navy to exercise maximum restraint and avoid use of force in such situations," the statement said.

Solution is very simple if someone does a mistake and refuses to take responsibility then go ahead and recreate a same incidence on a bigger scale. Let them taste their own medicine which is much bitter . It will never be repeated. We are preparing to take on China while small country like Bangladesh and Srilanka challenge us and we can do nothing about it . What kind of Enuch Foreign policy we have in our country.

May be simple to say but not that easier to do!! Its all about co-operation.. Here we members of DFI alone can't do that..

In India, we have 61% of literacy rate.

Only 62% votes during elections (as per election commission report '09).

39% of people in India are illiterate who votes to the politician who gives them nice package during campaigning!! And out of the 61% literacy people they vote based on the religion, caste, relation and party friends (Booz during campaigning)...

I am not able to give a complete break-down the percentage.. If a common man wants the Government to think about a common man then he has to think and choose the Government who cares for him... It will take another couple of decades to get the literacy level to teach people about it..

In this Nation, everything is abstracted at different levels. We really don't know what's happening at higher levels... Nobody knows. We pay tax and Switching the NEws channels hoping for good news.... Pathetic situation.. :(

NEW DELHI: India today summoned Sri Lankan High Commissioner Prasad Kariyawasam to lodge a strong protest over the killing of a fisherman by Lankan Navy, asserting that such incidents have no "justification" and calling on authorities there to "desist" from use of force.

However, the Sri Lankan envoy denied involvement of his country's Navy in the killing of the fisherman yesterday.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna has sought a detailed report from the Indian High Commissioner in Colombo, who has taken up this matter with the Lankan government and expressed "deep concern and regret" over it.

In a fresh incident of attack on Tamil Nadu fishermen in Palk Straits, one person was killed when Sri Lankan Navy allegedly opened fire at three fishermen, who put out to sea from Jagadapattinnam near Pudukottai.

Emphasising that resorting to firing in these situations has "no justification", India called on the Sri Lankan authorities to "desist" from use of force.

The Government summoned Kariyawasam to the MEA where the Joint Secretary in the division dealing with Sri Lanka registered India's strong protest.

Kariyawasam denied the involvement of Lankan Navy in the incident but said Colombo will conduct an inquiry since India had officially informed about it.

"Our enquiries reveal that the Sri Lankan Navy is not involved. The Navy is under strict orders never to fire at fishermen even if they cross international boundary line towards Sri Lanka," Kariyawasam told reporters after the meeting.

He said investigations will happen in Lankan side and Indian side as well to find out what exactly happened.

"But my information at this point from our Navy is that their vessels were not in that area...But nevertheless we will conduct an inquiry since we have been officially informed about this incident," he said.

Asked whether the incident happened on Sri Lankan side, he said their Navy never crosses into Indian waters "but as you know Indian fishermen sometimes crosses the boundary line and fish in our waters".

The MEA said, "we have consistently emphasised to the Sri Lankan Government to refrain from firing on our fishermen and scrupulously adhere to the October 2008 understanding reached between the two governments. We call on the Sri Lankan Navy to exercise maximum restraint and avoid use of force in such situations."

@Oracle, I have replied to Shash's thread

Solution is very simple if someone does a mistake and refuses to take responsibility then go ahead and recreate a same incidence on a bigger scale.
That means, we do not have a Government which reacts rather sends a 1000 page of dossier..
