Actually, it was Brig Lakhwinder using Bofors in Direct Firing Role that did the trick.
With one hundred guns in concert, Tololing was the first major ridgeline to fall on June 13, 1999 in the Dras sub-sector. Thereafter, Points 4590 and 5140 were captured after several weeks of bitter fighting and simultaneous multi-directional attacks. The 105 mm Indian field guns (IFGs) and 155 mm Bofors medium guns fired in the direct firing role, destroying all visible enemy sangars. The capture of the Tololing complex paved the way for successive assaults to be launched on the Tiger Hill complex from several directions. Within the space of a few days, Point 4700, Knoll and Three Pimples were captured. After a series of multi-directional assaults preceded by accurate and sustained preparatory bombardment by the Artillery, Tiger Hill was captured on July 5. Point 4875 another dominating feature to the west of Tiger Hill, jutting into the Mashko Valley, was captured on July 7. Once again, over one hundred guns delivered murderous fire assaults and over 1,200 rounds of high explosive shell rained down on Tiger Hill in five minutes, causing large-scale death and devastation.

Here again, the Indian Gunners fired their guns audaciously in direct firing role, under the very nose of Pakistani Artillery observation posts (OPs), without regard for personal safety. Even the 122 mm Grad MBRLs were employed in direct firing role. In Indias first televised battle, hundreds of shells and rocket warheads impacted on the pinnacle of Tiger Hill in full view of TV cameras and the nation watched in rapt attention. In recognition of the significant contribution made by the Artillery regiments that participated in this battle, Point 4875 was re-named as Gun Hill a unique honour bestowed on the Artillery. Due to the massive employment of all available firepower resources to decimate the enemys defences, 18 Grenadiers, the heroes of Tiger Hill, suffered only a handful of casualties during the final assault.

Like their comrades of the infantry, the Gunners rose to new heights of courage, determination and professionalism. It was a challenge of a magnitude never faced by the Indian artillery in any of the previous wars. While young FOOs and battery commanders fought shoulder to shoulder with the infantry, sustained and accurate shooting was done by the artillery guns. Shooting was so accurate that the infantry would at times call for artillery fire up to 40m, when normal safety distances were much higher. Such was the value attached to artillery fire to keep the enemy's head down, as long as possible before closing in with the enemy.

Excellent accounts which prove the need of artillery beyond doubt. The hundreds of guns deployed during Kargil proves beyond doubt that a large number of guns are needed if fighting is on a broader front.

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Army lost 2,700 military personnel in the Kargil conflict, far higher than its casualties during the 1965 and 1971 wars with India, former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif has said in his memoirs. Sharif said the extent of the casualties was so "huge" that he asked Musharraf how Pakistan suffered so many losses when his initial claim was that the military would not suffer any damage as the operations were being conducted by mujahideen. Musharraf attributed the casualties to carpet bombing of the Kargil peaks by India.

"I inquired (from Musharraf) were you not aware that this kind of bombing could take place. Musharraf said, 'Sir, we were not aware of it,'" Sharif said adding he was told the Indian artillery bombardment was so extensive that it blew off Pakistan soldiers hiding in trenches.Musharraf told Sharif that because the trenches did not have covers, the soldiers were directly exposed to artillery fire.

"Let me tell you by the time when the Washington deal took place, the Indians had already recaptured half of the peaks and were advancing further. I protected the Pakistan Army's honour or they would have been left with nothing," Sharif said.

In response to a question why he visited the front lines with Musharraf in the midst of Kargil episode, Sharif said he went after Musharraf insisted that he goes there and meet the soldiers.
