Army personnel beat up cops, mediamen - Indian Express

A group of Army men entered into an ugly brawl with policemen and civilians on Tuesday night when they were prevented by on-duty traffic cops at Alka Chowk from crossing the Sambhaji Bridge on two-wheelers that are banned on the bridge. The Army men later allegedly beat traffic cops, policemen and journalists.

According to DCP Dnyaneshwar Phadtare, at 9 pm two Young Officers (YOs) from the College of Military Engineering went on Sambhaji Bridge from the Garware Chowk side on motorcycles. When lady constables Latika Maner and Sunita Borude stopped them at the Alka Chowk, they got into an argument with them. The YOs were then taken to a police chowkey where one of them started beating the policemen and broke window panes and glass table top at the chowkey.

The traffic cops then contacted the control room which sent additional force to the spot. But soon two-three Army trucks carrying armed jawans arrived at the spot and joined the brawl. The jawans reportedly beat up the cops and onlookers. They also beat up mediapersons, who had reached the spot, and tried to snatch their cameras.

DCP Sanjay Jadhav, DCP Makrand Ranade, DCP (Traffic) Vishwas Pandhare reached the spot to control the situation. Ram Anuj Singh, second in command of military police, also reached the spot.

The process of lodging a complaint against the YOs by policemen and journalists was on till late night.

The Pune cops are notorious for catching unsuspecting riders for bribes. They stand at the other end of the bridge instead of the entrance.

^^ Maybe, but I have heard of cases in the past where there have been such brawls in various places. In different cities.

IMO, there should be a proper enquiry and the YOs should be thrown out unceremoniously if it was established that they actually 'cast the first blow', in terms of beating the policemen and breaking furniture there. Not only should they be thrown out, they should subsequently be exposed to the full process of civil law for beating policemen on duty. An example needs to be set somewhere to severely disincentivize such behaviour.

The nation holds the Army in high respect, and stringent action needs to be taken against officers who get into brawls in pubs and trains and order jawans to beat up onlookers/police etc. This is essential from the Army's POV also.

Young officers today are conversant with the happening around the country and the way dadagiri gets away.

The quality of the inductees also must be considered. Most of them are worldly wise and street savvy.

If they are at fault, exemplary punishment should be given and the Chief should give high publicity in the Army so that it is never repeated.

The problem of the Army is that all this Nehru's policy of making the army a part of the Nation has really made it a part of the Nation without any feeling of elitism that would prevent behaving like the normal and average man in the street.

So, where does the blame lie for such ruffian like behaviour?

To be fair to the Army, neither the police, judiciary nor the IAS cares to address problems and treats them as village bumpkins.

Therefore, it leads to frustration and suchlike behaviour.

If the system was fair, then these thing would not have happened!

Same thing happened a few years ago in Kolkata. Several civilians later told the media how the policemen were behaving like hooligans on the new year eve and were arresting people randomly. These days are good for the Policemen from monetary angle, but bad things happen to them, sometimes.

I don't feel sorry for the policemen, because I know what and how they do things, but strict action must be taken against the military personnel, if they were also involved in the wrongdoing.

Those young chaps were trying to get into 'No-entry-zone' on their bikes. After arrest, more Army guys came & vandalized Police Station; broke glasses & threw away office tables.

Sir Army chaps were at fault here. Two wheelers are banned on that Sambhaji Bridge. There are big signs at the entrance of bridge saying so. What hooliganism these young guys exhibited is not at all good for the image of Armed Forces.

^^ Yes - I have a feeling these officers' days in the Army are numbered, and rightly so. No excuse for hooliganism, which spoils the name of an entire organization. I hope it sets a suitable example for anyone who thinks of dadagiri in uniform going forward. It has occasionally happened in other places like pubs and trains in the past, and I think it is high time a severely strong example is set here.

If what you sa is true, then these men are at fault. Some reports suggest that the men were YO's (young officers).
It must also be rememberd that YO come for their course after they have completed the infantry attachment, and most come from the valley. So for them it takes some time to understand the rules of civilization.

Also it is possible the cops were rude, and the YO's lost their temper.

The full story will unfold in a day and we will get to know who is at fault.
Shame on the media for painting a one sided story. Good that they got bashed up.

I was not far from the area..

In tantra there are call girls dressed as normal girls looking for Y-chaps, these two officers fell in trap when the Pros asked for money they refused and the bouncer who was involve with the pros started attacking on Army guys, It turn ugly and police came at the spot they caught the officers and took them to police station locked them in cell and the did beat them, that was the time they called there CO, And he came with two stallions packed with Men armed with SLR..

Rest was the beating up of the Policemen who touched the officers, And a perfect extraction..
Till today, Kolkata Police allow Pros to stand at park-street and they do charge from them, They also deployed Kolkata SWAT members near by only after this..

The police must have done something not right here, Other wise why would army send trucks ?
If Army is so sensitive things would have regular i am taking about monthly incidents..

Recently there were several cases of clash between Army officers & Civil Police over absolutely minor issue. Both sides find it tough to get along in the event of disagreement.

It is very much possible that Traffic Cops tried to show off their power and behaved rudely when these YOs violated the law.

Few months back, wife of newly transferred Army officer was clicking photographs in some Pune fort where photography is not permitted. Women constable took her in custody & brought her to Police Station which was really unnecessary. The lady made a phone call to her husband & within 10mins 2 Jeeps full of Army Soldiers armed with automated weapons arrived at Police station. Appearantly her husband was serving a very senior position. Civil police was shyt scared looking at dozens of army soldiers holding weapons they never saw in their entire life. Soldiers didn't say a single word or touched anyone, police constable tore the papers themselves with hands shivering and asked the lady to go.

Where were these loose women when I was at tantra

Coming to the topic, Army guys esp near cantonment areas are generally a bit rude.

However, these incidents are on the rise and shall continue to be on the rise, because Army officers of today and of yore are very different, in terms of family background, education, motivation etc.
