Gunbattle along Line of Control enters 4th day

The gunbattle between infiltrators and the army along the Line of Control in Keran sector of Kupwara district, north Kashmir, entered the fourth day on Friday with troops using UAVs to spot the militants.

Around 40 militants of the Jaish-e-Mohammad, the Lashkar-e-Toiba, AL Badr and Hijb-ul-Mujahiddin have been trying to infiltrate into Kashmir. Around 12 militants have been gunned down so far by the army.

The militants are constantly getting replenishments from across the border, which is unusual and raises questions about their motive. Normally militants go back if their infiltration attempts fails.

The army has used UAVs to spot the militants. It also released the pictures showing the infiltrators trying to sneak into this side of LoC.

The army operation was launched on Tuesday following intelligence inputs about likely infiltration attempts. "They have been engaging troops for the past 72 hours by constantly getting replenishments. It is an unusual trend. Secondly, this attack happened at the time of change of guard at the battalion level. It shows that militants are getting concrete information about out troops movement," said an army officer.

"There is desperation among the outfits to push in as many terrorists as possible before the winter sets in and the impregnable counter infiltration grid established by the troops is deployed along the LoC," said Lt Gen Gurmit Singh, GoC of 15 Corps.

How in the Devil's are they managing to get replenishments from the other side? and for some strange reason no fresh casualties have been reported over the past 18-24 hours. It is unlikely such a large group can engage what must be atleast a brigade of troops without sustaining or inflicting any casualties....

In any case, This looks like a very long operation in the making. A reminder of operations in 2010-11, when certain operations stretched for a week or more. Any such operation will involve our causalties, make no mistake.

Maybe Its time to take a call on bringing in Close Air support to shorten the operation.

They said Pakistani Army units in the neighbouring sectors provided fire cover to the infiltrators who came in from the Bugina, Neelam, Kalaghat and Kel sectors of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). About a dozen infiltrators were getting replenished with supplies of food and ammunition from the Pakistani side, the sources added.

The army said the combing operation is "deliberately slow" to avoid any casualty in the tough terrains, where militants have fanned out and are hiding, taking advantage of green cover and mountain crevices. The operation is spread over 5-km with its terrain dotted by trees and has steep slopes and streams.

"We want to wear them (militants) out. They are hiding in different locations. We are deliberately going slow as the terrain is very difficult," Colonel Brijesh Pandey, a Srinagar-based army spokesman, said.
The army is not ruling out that "a few militants may have returned to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after being pushed by the alert army personnel".
