Army is going to be humiliated this time. Let me bet on Zardari. I may be wrong but my money goes to PPP.

Obama's money is also on Zardari and PPP. Amirkhans are not openly doing it to avoid Pushing Kayani and Pakistan into Chini lap.

one must never discount the popular support that the Army has, mullas are more likely to support the army rather than a secular government in Pakistan.

China gave Kayani a protocol like president of Pakistan during his recent visit.

The whole traction is there because of following equation, I think.

Kayani is Chinese pet, all the spine he has grown against NATO is dictated by China. All political class with foreign bank accounts is compromised to USA.

Army with all its nuclear posture (only saviour) which is an extension of Chinese nuclear weapon program is compromised to China.

One thing I can say with confidence is - conditions are not ripe for Pak Army/ISI for a coup.

How?????????????????
Right from the days he was DG ISI, he is known to be pro China gangster in Pak Army.... He is persuading pro Beijing objectives rather than being pro USA.

That is the general assessment prevailing.

Pak in turmoil: Army changes top commander amid coup rumours

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Army on Wednesday changed the commander of a Rawalpindi-based unit that has traditionally played a vital role in military coups as army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani gathered his key aides to assess an escalation in tensions with the civilian government.

Brig Sarfaraz Ali was named the new commander of the 111 Brigade, an infantry formation that is part of the X Corps and has usually been called out during past military takeovers to take over key buildings and installations in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sources said.

The change of the commander of the brigade could be part of "posturing" by the powerful military as tensions increased with the Pakistan People's Party-led government over the memo scandal, the sources said.

In a related development, Gen Kayani held a meeting with his Principal Staff Officers at the General Headquarters after the Prime Minister sacked defence secretary Lt Gen (retired) Khalid Naeem Lodhi, considered to be very close to the army chief.

Kayani was expected to hold another meeting on Thursday with his PSOs and Corps Commanders, sources said.

Lodhi was sacked by Gilani minutes after the military warned there could be "grievous consequences" for the premier's remarks that the army and Inter-Services Intelligence chiefs had violated the Constitution in their handling of the memo scandal.

The weak civilian government and the powerful military have been at loggerheads for the past few months over the alleged memo that had sought US help to prevent a feared coup after the killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in May last year.

Gilani said on Monday that the army and ISI chiefs had not sought or obtained approval from the government for replies on the memo issue that they had filed in the Supreme Court. He contended that their actions were "unconstitutional and illegal".

The military hit back on Wednesday in a terse statement that said Gilani's remarks had "very serious ramifications with potentially grievous consequences for the country".

A statement from Gilani's office said the Defence Secretary was sacked for creating misunderstandings between state institutions over the memo issue.

coup is highly unlikely, cant see how and why the PA would play the game that PPP wants it to play.

PPP is absolutely clear that the judiciary, and the army have joined hands to oust them. NRO, and the memo gate scandal are a drama to make the ends meet and no more, if they get ousted by the judiciary, they go out humiliated, if the army ousts them, they play the victim card back in sindh, arouse passions and do what i wrote in the last post here, which is precisely what the PPP is provoking the PA to do.

my sense is, even if pasha is sacked, there wont be a coup because the core commanders whose promotions were due are extremely pissed off with kayani's and pasha's extensions, and kayani wont go for the extreme step. expect a coup only when kayani gets sacked and even then it seems unlikely because as mentioned the core commanders arent happy and kayani does come across as someone who can't do a coup.

this will be done through the judiciary, either a compromise will be reached, which looks highly unlikely or the SC will ask the GoP to enact the ruling passed, and if the GoP does a dilly dally, then the army might be asked to enact the ruling and if this is to happen, this will happen pretty soon, this month looks a definite possibility because next month the senate elections are to happen.

with that one will see an interim government take over, and when it is felt it to be opportune time to hold elections by when IK's chances of making it as the next PM seem certain, then the elections will be called in.

Joker in the pack says....

Sharif calls for early polls to end political crisis in Pak

Islamabad: As confrontation mounted between the Pakistan government and the Army on the one side, and the judiciary on the other, opposition leader Nawaz Sharif said holding immediate polls was the only was out of the crisis.

Asking President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to "not play with the fate of this country any more," the former premier said Pakistan cannot allow to lose the hard-earned gains made by democracy.

"The only way to pull the country out of this crisis situation is to hold polls as soon as possible," Sharif told reporters as tension simmered in Islamabad over the government's confrontation with the powerful Army.

"We will not allow them to create any more chaos," Sharif said, referring to the PPP-led government.

It was a day of hectic activity in Islamabad as the government and the Army initiated tit-for-tats moves as part of their posturing.

The confrontation has arisen from the memo scandal after Gilani made public his annoyance over the affidavit submitted by Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and ISI chief Shuja Ahmed Pasha in the Supreme Court without seeking a prior permission from the government.

While the military said Gilani's allegation that chiefs of army and ISI acted in unconstitutional manner had "very serious ramifications", Gilani hit back by firing the Defence Secretary Lt Gen (retd) Khalid Naeem Lodhi.

Sharif said the developments should not in any way be allowed to undermine democracy.

"We have rendered numerous sacrifices to achieve this goal. We will not allow anyone to take it away from the people or put it at stake," said the PML-N chief.

DD,

joker in the pack is of huge value. Just wondering did you use it deliberately to signify something?

@article,

Na, not so soon, the elections still have some time to go, don't expect them to be in the first half, latter half, yes, a definite certainty post the monsoons around September/October.

There is this jalsa that PTI has planned in quetta on the 23[SUP]rd[/SUP] march, anything on elections it seems will happen only post that, but then come the summers and right after, the monsoons and Pakistan is habitual of getting flooded, so elections a little later, but an interim government could happen pretty soon.

Nawaz sharif is desperate to have these elections asap, and the PA is no fool to give them any advantage. If they have secured the crown for IK, no way will anyone else be allowed to walk away with it.
