Army calls off new year parties in memory of Delhi gangrape victim

    New Delhi, December 31, 2012

Against the backdrop of the death of the Delhi gangrape victim, the Army has issued advisories to all its formations across the country against holding new year parties.

Advisory has been issued to all formations that they should not organise new year parties, Army officials said in New Delhi.
Army chief Gen Bikaram Singh and his wife Bubbles Singh will visit patients in Army Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi and Base Hospital on the first day of the new year and distribute sweets.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi too has announced that the party will not be celebrating the new year following the incident.

Amid outpouring of anger and grief in the country, the body of the 23-year-old victim was flown to the capital from Singapore early yesterday morning and cremated within hours.

    Agreed.

Will the army cancel there "party" every year because there's bound to be a rape even on the 31st somewhere in India. If not then it would be discriminating among the rape victims.

I received a sms yesterday asking to boycott the republic day on jan 26th!

It's more on sentiment the brutality of the incident and overall anger that has may be prompted this. Otherwise yes there are rapes every day in India.

I presume it is show concern and sharing the sorrow with the common people.

Of course, it is only a tokenism..

I would say it insulates from being called heartless by those who find any excuse to do down an organisation, maybe out of envy.

Army functions are so precise that many think that it is all through service manpower and funds, conveniently missing the facts that the club is run on the members fund and the workers are civilians. This causes envy and we have to be very sensitive.

Atleast we are showing our concern its sad that some are saying that its only a rape.

Its the brutal murder of a 23year old girl who was doing her bit to succeed in life and its utter shame that her life has been taken by beasts.

I just hope for swift justice (hope for death penalty)
