A first: Foreign interest in Arjun tank
COMMENT ON THIS !

Seeking to build up its armoured warfare capabilities to crush a potential threat from Venezuela, its Latin American neighbour Colombia has shown interest in buying India’s indigenous Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun.

The first ever expression of interest from abroad in the MBT Arjun could translate into an export order worth Rs 1,700 crore, with Colombia wanting to raise at least two regiments of main battle tanks.

“Bogota has expressed interest in the MBT Arjun. The Colombian army has an immediate requirement for 10 tanks to be followed up with the induction of another 100 over five years,” said a senior official, on the condition of anonymity.

The competitors for the Colombian order include France (MBT Leclerc), US (MIAI Abram), Israel (Sabra), Korea (KI AI) and China.

India’s reluctance to export military equipment could tip the scales in the favour of international suppliers. The ministry of external affairs had recently turned down a Bolivian request for a line of credit to buy seven Dhruv advanced light helicopters worth over Rs 300 crore from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

Arjun need to first win the battle against American Arm twisting before competing against all other competiting against all other contextent. But good, in case we manage to export even ten of them, then it will be regarded as a miracle for DRDO and must needed booster to arrive at BreakEven Point by supplying atleast 500 such MBTs to Indian Army.

Really good to know this.

Eagerly waiting for the comparative trials. I do think the DRDO army collaboration left a lot to be desired in the case of Arjun.

Hope they can do better in future projects. Such adversarial attitude won't take them too long.

Don't know what's the problem but if the comparative trails go well then we will have more countries interested in Arjun.

Not American arm twisting, Russian arms lobby arm twisting. It's the Russians who feel threatened by Arjun tank. If we had started making our own tanks, Russia would've lost billions of dollars in T-90 deal, as well as future tank deals.

The Russian lobby also has influence over a large part of Indian Army leadership, hence the Arjun vs T-90 trials being postponed until after summer. Had the comparison trials taken place in summer, it would've exposed major T-90 weakness in Rajasthan desert heat.

Arjun MBT Production may take a hit due to Army delays

BY : AJAY FOR IDRW TEAM

Early this year (May 2009) Indian Army raised it first Arjun tank regiment by inducting 16 tanks from the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) Avadi, Tamil Nadu the developers of the Main Battle Tank, Taking the numbers so far to 45 and the remaining 80 odd tanks are to be delivered by early Summer next year . Army for long has avoided Operational capabilities Trials with T-90s citing reasons that 40 tons T-90s cannot be compared to an almost 60 tons Arjun Tank while also claiming that Tank had many defects which have not been fixed, while DRDO and CVRDE the makers of the MBT always instated on it, in a unusual stand Army only agreed to Operational capabilities Trials when DRDO roped in Third party ‘International Tank Maker ‘ to do a Audit on the Arjun MBT to evaluate the battle worthiness of the Tank , it was not surprising that the Arjun was termed has an excellent tank in the evaluation carried out by the Israeli firm. But the old habits die hard and Army has been trying to find more reasons to delay the induction of the tanks and has kept the trials only in the November -December, worrying factor is that by March 2010 80 odd tanks will be ready for induction and if successive orders are not placed Production line will be left idle which will only delay production of more tanks , while Army has shown little interest in ordering more then 124 currently ordered Arjun tanks ,while the developers of the tank DRDO and CVRDE have told Army and GOI that it needs orders of more then 500 tanks to make the whole project feasible and successful . Army on the other hand held a program on the “International Seminar on future MBTs” last year, during which parameters and requirements of the future MBTs were discussed where army hopes to induct a new futuristic MBT after 2020, while many of the Defense experts who attended from around the world advocated development of Arjun MBT into further versions to meet future requirements ,if the current decision of army does not change into further orders for the Arjun tank, the production line might have to be closed due to lack of orders.

Well, the true reason why the army is rejecting it is its weight, its size, maintenance intensive.the original specifications were stipulated as 40 tons. The japanese have reduced their tanks weight to 45 tons. Atleast in the future let the primary user finance the initial stages of the project from their own pockets, then ask for funds. But the army's rigidity to its thoughts is worrying.

well arjun is the result of IA's own goalpost.how can they turn around and say it is overweight?the reason may be is they know they have bungled.the moment t-90 and arjun faceoff they know arjun will win and they have to answer for both t-90 and arjun!!
