The preamble of our constitution says, We the people of India, have solemnly resolved to make India into Sovereign Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic nation. Have we (The people of India, Government of India, Indian Parliament, Supreme Court of India) failed in our resolution to make our country socialist and secular in true values.
The evidence which I want to present and which has compelled me to think; Why all of us (the stakeholders to our constitution, us who call ourselves Indian) have to fill Religion & Caste in any or all of the government forms through out lives, right from our birth certificates through to our death certificates. When our constitution has given us birth right to be treated equal in all respects. I am in favor of removing this piece of information from all the books of government right from getting admissions in school, getting a government job or even contesting elections. This junk of information given our politicians a deadly weapon to divide our society in the name of religion caste and creed when they ask for votes. It is this junk of information which has given birth to quota system. In our 67th year of independence if still quota system exists it means that we have failed to abide by the values of our constitution.

I suggest that supreme court of India and our parliamentarians should seriously think about bringing reforms in this area and make sure that no state or central government data should have any classification of its resources in the name for religion, caste and creed and check if this can be coined into a rule or amendment to Penal codes

Benefits are endless if such a value is imbibed in our society. First of all it would change the equation of politics, politicians and voters. In past 67 years none of our politicians has asked us to vote because we are Indian but this will compel them to do so.

    What do you think ??

Everyone is singing that secularism song like parrots without even understanding.

India is an essentially religious country, but a place where you are free to practice your religion, the "secularism" being practiced is muslim appeasement

    Are we secular?

Absolutely, We are as secular as secularity gets. Infact, secularism flows within the veins faster than blood.

We are absolutely impartial in who we blow up in terrorist attacks,
We are absolutely secular in taking bribes.
We are truly secular in duping people of their saving,
We are truly secular as far as Police apathy goes.
We are impeccably secular, aren't we?

After all, the worst of the society is a monument of our secularism. Surely, the better parts of the society will be one up on them.

Since the Secularism is separation of church and state, it doesn't matter whether the people are secular or not; it is the constitution that needs to be secular.

That, I'm sorry to say, is being idealistic. Truth is, I too had similar notions. The opinion of the people do not matter, the rules are overlord, Rules mean everything and the lot.

But then, it only takes a large enough congregation of people to trample over the constitution and its contents. And we have enough people to do it on a daily basis if push came to shove.

The nation, and its subjects, must be secular. Not just the constitution, not just the rules, nor just the people. All the pillars of government and the people have to believe in secularism for it to practical. Else it turns into another academic word, devoid of real world application

I don't understand, how can people be Secular, when the definition of Secularism is separation of Church and state? Secularism by definition is applicable to government systems not people.

It is an established term with a clear definition. I am not sure how hijacking a word would make it more suitable for our needs.

Secularism by definition does not apply to people (not the morphed/bastardized Indian politician version of equal-equal).

The constitution in many cases does not reflect the will of the people but the idea of social justice or reason.

The term you are looking for is Secular Humanism. Even then, it would be a sweeping generalization to brand all Indians Secular Humanist/Non-Secular humanists. The better phrasing for the question would be: Is our constitution secular?

Not all many cringe about being discriminated, therefore all this rights being extended by all "secular" parties are far from meeting its objectives.

When Did People of India said they are secular??

Our constitution never evolved from the peoples lives, rather it was written by few men who took more examples from alien constitutions.

People of India are never secular, they are just tolerant to others faiths and beliefs as they have lived together over centuries.

If You want to have a secular constitution, then it should not give the minorities any special privilege... But Our governments have used this secularism concept to appease the minorities and give them a preferential treatment, This as it separates the minorities from the Majorities, also tests the tolerant nature of the Majorities.

This is a similar situation that contributed to the rise of Right wings across the globe in the history.
