I once worked as a journalist. On the street asked students 19-20 years. When the 2WW?. When the Great Patriotic war? Who was then an ally of the USSR? Who was an ally of Nazi Germany? They to these questions answered uncertainly, not what about Lenin.

Who was a better leader -- Lenin or Stalin?
Well, Stalin was a paranoid sociopath, and his ideology of "Socialism in One Country" was antithetical to the basic tenets of communist ideology. He turned the Communist International into a mere sock-puppet of the CPSU, and alienated many communists around the world through his realpolitik. In this way, he possibly diminished the USSR's potential soft power, as well as their claim to moral supremacy over the capitalist West.

On the other hand, it was his rapid industrialization and modernization of the USSR, coupled with his firm leadership, which led to the defeat of the Nazis.

On the whole, however, I would say that Lenin was the greater leader.

Each in his own "good." But keep in mind. Lenin established the power of the RSDLP during the Civil War, where the terror was necessary to ideological opponents.
