If this interview is genuine (I have not seen concrete evidence that it is), then it is actually rather disappointing. Even this "progressive" Muslim leader has a negative view of Akbar (one of the only kings in Indian history with any sort of vision for the future) and is opposed to Partition fundamentally because Partition hurt Islam's chances of growing in India proper.

I think Partition in way was a boon to Hindus of India that unwittingly due to the Muslims, Hindus of India got a Hindu majority country for themselves.

The reason he was against partition are two:

    1. Balance Indian state would be HINDU. How can a muslim live in such a state?

    2. With undivided India, muslim could hope grab the complete political power in near future. Good thing partition. Undivided India by now would have been an islamic state by now.

Partition was a boon, but Maulana Nehru under influence of Maulana Azad did not accept it.

I agree with all three comments to this article above. Whoever opposes partition in Pakistan/BD always does so because according to them, it "weakened the Muslims". Altaf Hussain, the leader of Pakistani party MQM said in India a few years back, that "the division of the subcontinent was the greatest blunder in the history of mankind". Later, when he was asked to clarify in a Pakistani TV interview, he said that he stood by his statement, because the Muslims got divided and weakened due to partition. That is the standard thinking with all the Paki and BD intellectuals.

That is why I get puzzled with right-wing Hindus who advocate "akhand Bharat", and moan about partition as a great loss. I will scream at the next person who advocates "akhand Bharat" here, seriously. Partition was a boon for modern India, let us understand that and appreciate Djinnah for the service he did (unwittingly). This POV needs to be widely disseminated and repeated as long as possible. No one should ever talk about "reunification" and such shit.

Obviously that thinking is also flawed as seen by the fact that East and West Pakistan went their separate ways in 1971.

It is not flawed. Instead of one, now we have to contend with two inimical states. E. Pak was earlier a liability for Pakistan, freed of that it has embarked on promoting terrorism against India.

BD being surrounded by India on all sides should be easier to handle, plus Ganga and Brahmaputra flow in from India so we control their water as well. It is just a matter of political will IMO.
