Fear of economic meltdown might force Congress to call for early elections in 2013 or 2012 itself as per this analysis.
The party is worried that voter discontent with the Manmohan Singh government is pulling down its image and that of the Gandhi family.

The calculation is that Congress is still in a position to win about 135 Lok Sabha seats and therefore can support a non-BJP government on the lines of the Deve Gowda and I.K. Gujral model in 1996 and 1997. The fear is that an election 18 or 22 months later could push the Congress to less than 100 seats and make it irrelevant to government formation. :pound:

Instead of working its way to revive the country, put it into a mess of election and uncertainty which will further push the country down.

It will be suicidal for Congress to call elections now.

If a spate of populist measures are pushed through in the next few months and also if the monsoon is normal, we can expect polls by the end of the year. However it is a gamble for the Congress party, with the mood of the nation ready to punish it.

We have to remember what the voters did in UP-- they punished BSP and voted en-bloc for SP the party theu felt was the strongest to take on Behenji. Even those opposed to SP voted for it.

As I have said earlier BJP will be the biggest beneficiary of this negative votes and will gain in a major way in urban centers.

Free fall of rupee, falling stock market, inflation - all these factors might get worse in coming months. So cutting losses at this point may be the strategy, who knows.

anti congress vote does not mean pro bjp vote.in wb,assam, andhra, kerala,tn,ne upa has 110 mp.and bjp has 4 mp.vote share is negectable 6%.its regional party who will be benifited.wb,kerala its cpm will get, assam opposition is week and bjp unpopular among assamese hindu.andhra its tdp, trs.tn its aidmk.ne bjp can't get chirstian vote.if you think voter of wb,assam,tn,ne,kerala, andhra who voted for upa will vote for bjp really!in up bjp has 56 mp in 98,29 in 99,12 in 2004,10in 2009.bjp lose 4 sits and 2%vote share.ram-babri issue go to court and does not apple voter.bjp declines in up.up politics is cast based and bjp has upper cast tag.majority voters of congress 12%vote were in up are muslims, dalits.muslim, dalit vote for sp,bsp not for bjp sure.
so anti congress=pro bjp is not correct.

@sob i say anti congress=pro bjp vote is not correct.

upa has 118 mp in assam,wb,kerala, tamil nadu,ne,andhra state.

but bjp has only 4 mp and 6% vote share.so you can't think voters of those state will vote for bjp.
it is regional party who will get vote.
in up bjp showes decline by losing 4 sits and 2%votes.
in up congress votes comes from muslim, dalit.
it will be sp,bsp who will get those vote not bjp.
anti congress vote is not pro bjp.bjp is not alternative of congress in west bengal, assam, kerala,ne,andhra, tamil nadu, even in uttar pradesh

^^ In short, you're saying we will have a turd front next time.

With Mamata as Finance minister, some goonda from SP as Home minister, laloo yadav as defence minister, deve gowda as external affairs minister... etc. etc.

Great. Might as well commit collective suicide.

I'd be happy to see either BJP or Congress in with a good majority rather than mad Didi, clown Laloo or Goonda Mulayam at Delhi. Preferably BJP as Congress has made too many scams in two consecutive terms.

.Regional parties will play a major role in the next election. People like Nitish Kumar,Naveen Patnaik,J.Jayalalitha,Mulayam ,Mamatha,Andhra's YSR congress ,C.Naidu among with other regional parties will hold the key in Govt fromation. If BJP wants to form a Govt, it as deal with many of the above said people and would have substantially share power with these people further the BJP as set its own house in order vis a vis Modi and Yeddyurappa .We might also see a resurgence of Left parties in Kerla and West Bengal

After seeing current economic datas. If third front comes in power, India will head for bankruptcy for second time since 1947. First time, it was also during third front and second time again third front although today, UPA-2 is making sure that next government and country will face the music!!

    I agree with Shuridh.

There are a class of people who will never vote for BJP whatever be the situation - scams, bad policies, inflation, price rise - i mean whatever. And the same group has the tendency of voting in a bloc , more or less.

So the next time it would be Congress again, but with an even reduced number of seats on its own and more dependent on regional parties.

The situation in the country is such that Congress would be silly to chance an election.

Privately, Rahul aides are dismissive of the Manmohan Singh team, referring to the senior (citizen) ministers as the "Jurassic Park", but Rahul and his aides to include Digvijay Singh are but a caricature of the Marx Brothers or even Laurel and Hardy and these comic teams would be put in the shade for slapstick by Rahul and his aides.

Sonia Gnadhi is the fountainhead of the monumental failure of the UPA since she did the backseat driving, power without accountability!

Congress has come out the joker of the pack.

To imagine they released the 'wonders' done by UPA II when they were the brainless wonders themselves!

And they showed thier cowardliness by the petrol hike one day after the Parliament session was over!

And Renuka Chodhri was a laughing stock with her dramatic facial movements on TV and being so pathetic in her defence of the most unimaginable governance perpetuated on the people by rudderless people!
