Ukraine's Anotnov aircraft designer plans to introduce a military transport version of its brand-new An-158 regional jet that made its first flight at the end of April. The new transport, dubbed An-178, will have a payload of 15 tons and is intended to replace the aging fleet of An-12 transports, said Dmitry Kiva, president and general designer of Antonov Group, at ILA 2010.

The new aircraft is expected to have a range of 1,200 km with full load and 3,200 km with a 10 tons load. According to Kiva, An-178 can be a cheap solution as it will use many components -- wing, tail fins and cockpit -- from An-158 aircraft, but will add a large cargo compartment with a ramp door.

The first prototype can be ready in two years. The new Antonov aircraft can rival Russia's MTA transport aircraft program in India. This transport aircraft with an 18 ton payload has been in development for almost 10 years, but the program still faces serious delays. Kiva mentioned that Antonov is already in talks with the Indian side on its possible involvement in the An-178 program.

Antonov Design Bureau begins to design An-178 transport aircraft

Kyiv-based Antonov Design Bureau has begun to design An-178 transport aircraft, according to the Kommersant-Ukraine newspaper.
An-178 will become a modification of popular An-158 aircraft and should replace the fleet of An-26 and An-32 planes that are actively used by the Russian Air Force, the Middle East and African countries. "Standard changes for cargo aircraft will be made in the An-158 design. For example, the aircraft fuselage will be enlarged," said Viacheslav Bohuslayev, the president of Zaporizhzhia-based Motor Sich that will design and produce engines for the aircraft. He said that the new aircraft would have a carrying capacity of 15-20 tons and that it would take around two years to draft the aircraft's design, produce an aircraft prototype and to test the prototype.

ukraine, it seems had asked india to partner in this project. considering AN 32 (with 7.5 tons, being upgraded) and MTA (with russia for 20 tons (?) - still to take off ) this gives an in between option for the IAF. it would be prudent to go with IMO.

here is the link -

"Ukraine has offered to jointly produce a 10-12 tonne class weight aircraft with us based on their already existing Antonov-148 commercial aircraft and the proposal is being considered by the government," defence ministry officials told PTI.
