Anti-racism and anti-Islam protestors clash in Australian cities | Herald Scotland

Sunday 5 April 2015

Thousands of anti-Islam and anti-racism protesters have clashed during rallies in cities around Australia.

Reclaim Australia, a community group, organised rallies in 16 cities and towns around Australia against Islamic extremism and what it called the "Islamisation" of Australian society.

However there were scenes of angry clashes as groups including No Room for Racism, Socialist Alliance and Socialist Alternative staged counter-protests.

The most violent was in Melbourne, Australia's second-largest city, where police struggled to separate opposing demonstrators.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said the Victoria state ambulance service treated four people, three for minor injuries, from assaults in Melbourne. The fourth was treated for chest pains.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty says police arrested two men and a woman in Melbourne's Federation Square.

Australia Rocked By Anti-Islamic Protests

.......In Melbourne and Sydney counter-protesters interrupted the demonstration, according to the Sydney Morning Herald:

"In Melbourne, hundreds of people washed spit from their faces on Saturday evening after clashes between supporters of Reclaim Australia, an anti-Islamic movement, and No Room For Racism, a coalition of trade union, community and left-wing groups, including the Socialist Alliance.

The Sydney Reclaim Australia, which went ahead in pouring rain in Martin Place, was interrupted by a protester who ran onto the stage and grabbed the microphone from one of the organisers, Sarah Spearpoint, shouting to the crowd they should be "ashamed" of themselves
."

Not all of the Reclaim Australia demonstrations led to conflict:

"In Brisbane, police kept protesters and counter-protesters apart. One Nation leader Pauline Hanson attended the rally there, declaring she was not a racist and that "criticism is not racism." She told the rally that she was merely a proud Australian fighting for the country's democracy and way of life......."
