Periyar’s Followers Have A Perverse Sense Of Justice
In 2006, when a statue of Periyar (EV Ramasamy Naicker) was damaged in Srirangam by unknown people, goons belonging to various Periyar outfits unleashed a spate of attacks on Hindu temples across the state. But they also followed it up with specifically targeting Brahmins in the state. Sacred thread worn by at least four Brahmins were cut. A petrol bomb was thrown at Ayodhya Mandapam in Chennai, a place where Brahmins congregate to listen to devotional speeches. Now, in 2015, two Brahmin temple priests, easily identifiable with their tuft of hair and trademark dress have been attacked in two separate incidents in Chennai, and their sacred thread cut off by six goons belonging to Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (Dravidian Liberation Front).
The provocation now is probably linked to a function organized by Dravidar Kazhagam to demonstrate removal of ‘thaali’ (mangala sutra) and eating beef, and the all around opposition to that event by Hindus in general.

It all started with a programme in Puthiya Thalaimurai TV. Promos started appearing for a show that was to debate whether married women should continue to wear mangala sutra. Hindutva groups protested vociferously and the programme was dropped from the schedule. During the protest a camera person of the TV station was attacked, and the attackers were detained by the police.

Dravidar Kazhagam (DK), an outfit started by Periyar and currently run by K. Veeramani announced that they will organize a function in their Periyar Ground on the day of the Tamil New Year where women will voluntarily remove their mangala sutra. To add more spice to the function DK also announced that they will consume beef to protest against Maharashtra BJP government’s ban on beef.

Hindu organizations protested vehemently. Even the DMK partymen who generally work in tandem with DK felt uncomfortable as the assembly election is around the corner in 2016. Chennai Police banned the event. DK went to High Court and got a stay. Police approached a High Court bench to reinstate the ban. In the gap between the two judgments, DK hastily organized the function where many women volunteers removed their mangala sutra, and the crowd celebrated the event with a beef banquet. DMK’s Karunanidhi was cautious and said he did not support managala sutra removal events.

Shiv Sena which has a minor presence in the state staged a protest near DK’s office and this resulted in both sides physically attacking each other. Police intervened and had to resort to lathi charge.

It is in this backdrop that we have to look at the attack on the Brahmin priests.

Periyar’s DK movement is clearly anti-Hindu. It is against the Hindu gods, Hindu puranas, Hindu rituals and Hindu practices. It is therefore natural to expect devout Hindus to be against Periyar’s movement. Hindutva organizations are bound to demonstrate against DK and vice versa. But DK has also been vehemently anti-Brahmin. Its magazines are used to not only denigrate Hinduism in general but also specifically to attack only the Brahmins, leaving out every other caste.

Brahmins are, according to DK and Periyar, the root of all evil in Hinduism. Periyar repeatedly and wrongly used to propagate that the word ‘Sudra’ meant people born of illegitimate relationship. To this day, Periyarists state this without any proof and instigate hatred against the Brahmins. Their perverse logic goes this way. Brahmins with their tuft of hair and sacred thread remind the rest of the state’s population that they are Sudras and thus their parental background is questioned. That is, the very sporting of tuft and sacred thread by the Brahmins is insulting to the rest.

Thus, the goons cutting the sacred thread is not committing a crime. He is only wiping away the insult heaped on him by the Brahmin.

Another aspect has to be noted as well. Over the last few years, Hindu consolidation is happening in Tamil Nadu. People across the castes are coming together under various Hindutva organizations and the support for BJP has surged.

In response to the mangala sutra removal and beef eating event, photographs were circulated in social media of some women beating Periyar’s photo with footwear and some men urinating on Periyar’s photo. One can very clearly see that the people performing these acts not Brahmins but those belonging to other castes. But Brahmins are easily identifiable. Even within Brahmins, the orthodox Temple Priests are the easiest to spot and more importantly, the easiest to attack.

Hate crimes have no place in a modern society. I have argued elsewhere that Periyar’s movement, variously known as non-Brahmin movement, self-respect movement or Dravidian movement wanted to establish non-Brahmin, non-Dalit stranglehold over the political and administrative establishment in Tamil Nadu and successfully achieved the same. But there are fault lines in the Dravidian movement and the movement is disintegrating from within. The die-hard Periyarists cannot accept this and they would like to bring the non-Brahmin, non-Dalit forces together once again.

They cannot understand the fury of non-Brahminical Hindus attacking Periyar’s image. In their ignorance, all they can do is attack hapless Brahmin temple priests, who according to them signify the essence of Brahminical superiority in matters spiritual. The reality is far from that. Temple priests, both Brahmin and non-Brahmin are the poorest lot in the state, tied strongly to their daily rituals, earning a small fraction of what a full-time temple administrative employee gets paid every month. The temple priests are the ones in need of financial help and schemes for social uplifting.

The Periyarists, self-styles champions of social justice in Tamil Nadu, do have a perverse sense of what social justice is.

Leftists are cleansing TN of Brahmins. On twitter people reported that the last time this anti-Brahmin Dravidian-ism surged , TN villages were left without Brahmins. These will become easy target for Missionaries.

Well i had read this article some time back and found it strange that Tamil Brahmins face such discrimination and hatred in their own state. I was half brought up by my Tambram neighbours so i can't imagine why anyone would be against such lovely people.

'The angst of the Tamil brahmin: Live and let live'
    Dec 8, 2014, 06.58AM IST

When Narendra Modi expanded his cabinet and made Manohar Parrikar and Suresh Prabhu cabinet ministers, journalist Rajdeep Sardesai tweeted thus: "Big day for my Goa. Two GSBs (Gowd Saraswat Brah min), both talented politicians become full cabinet ministers. Saraswat pride!!" The last bit "Saraswat pride" indicating brahmin caste affinity and pride caused considerable stir in the media.

Brahmins may be at the top of the archaic social hierarchy, but in reality they hold little or no power across the country. They are numerically insignificant in most states and are not found in the public sphere at all. This is more so in Tamil Nadu than any other state.

Share of Tamil and Telugu brahmins was disproportionately large in the government of pre-independent Madras province. But the quota system initiated by the Justice party and the Dravidian movement over the years has meant that brahmins are almost completely excluded from medical seats, and are mostly out of contention in government jobs and good engineering schools. Brahmins once formed a significant percentage in teaching jobs in schools and colleges. Now, their percentage is minuscule.

Politically, brahmins have been complete ly stripped of any possible power. With very few options available in TN, there was a brahmin exodus to Bombay and Delhi in search of jobs in the 1970s. Post the liberalised 1990s, and the proliferation of self-financed engineering colleges, brahmins chose engineering and then IT jobs. As the need for executive managers arose in companies, many took to MBA. Today IT, management and CA are the chosen professions of brahmins. Many have migrated to the US and have been instrumental in many Silicon Valley start-up successes. Many have taken to entrepreneurship in India too and helped to seed the IT revolution in India. In Tamil Nadu, the political narrative has been stridently anti-brahminical. Though brahmins have been away from politics, the Dravidian parties have always resorted to blaming everything on a purported "brahminical conspiracy". Modi is brahminical. Jayalalitha too is, but only for DMK and not for AIADMK. Centre's promotion of Sanskrit or Hindi is brahminical. Congress or BJP's anti-LTTE stand is brahminical. Market economy and globalisation are termed brahminical.

It is also routine for Tamil movies to depict brahmins in bad light. The theme of the recent movie, `Jeeva', is that a brahminical conspiracy is keeping talented non-brahmin cricket players from reaching the state team. A putative theory about brahmins suppressing nonbrahmins for the last 2,000 years and denying them education and other privileges has gained currency and is today taken for granted. No proof is required. No further research is required.

Even OBC violence on dalits across the state is explained in terms of brahminism, a term that implies that all evils of the caste system are because of brahmins and hence they and only they have to be held responsible for such vio lence.

Yet, the reality is very different. Though no statistical data is available, anecdotally I can say that brahmins have inter-married more than any other caste in Tamil Nadu.

There is no rancour or resorting to honour killing when inter-caste or inter-religious marriages happen. They have been at the forefront of pre serving performing arts, heritage monuments and culture in the state and have done much to promote Tamil language and literature. They have contributed immensely to science, engineering, medi to science, engineering, medicine and education in the state.

Politically excluded and socially reviled, what can the Tamil brahmins do to preserve their identity and yet feel secure within the social space in Tamil Nadu and India?
Brahmins are unlikely to demand any kind of reservation in education, job or political sphere. All they would look for is an amenable climate where they can, like other communities, contribute to the progress of the nation. In a liberal country , we would like communities such as Muslims, Christians, Parsis and Jains preserving their unique faith, tradition, customs, attire, language and practices. The same has to be extended to the brahmins of Tamil Nadu. They should be allowed to retain multiple identities -that of a brahmin, a Tamil and an Indian -with pride.

The political hate narrative in Tamil Nadu must change.

What can I say ..... It's just like the Nazis blaming the jews. :(
Infact in a comment on the original article some wrote:
What about the 50% quota. Inspite of decking the odds against Brahmins they will outshine any free loader any day. Not because any special powers, but because they earn it through hard work.

Is it just TN or all South Indian states where anti brahmanism is pervasive? i am asking because I do not know the situation that well. Yes, average brahmins outsmart average non brahmins in TN, jealousy, brainwashing by Tamil chauvinists, communists, Christians etc. lead many goons to assault Brahmins.

Maha doesn't have any brahmin harassment like what is posted in the article. In politics it might be a rarity however the peshwas were brahmins and most of maharashtra's reformers have been brahmins.

The problem with brahmins is they cannot go down to the level of others. And others cannot compete with them at their level, that leads to bad blood.

Yup. There was no physical attacks and threat to life like TN. Just that people didn't vote for them. But the new generation is not like that and is very ignorant and indifferent to cast equations.
The last time I remember actual physical violence against Brahmins in MAHA was when Godse killed gandhi and his "gandhian" followers attacked brahmin homes as a retaliation. If the attaker were muslim , I am sure they would not have done so.

They simply dissappear. They move out for greener pastures. They don't have the numbers and even if they espouse nationalism , like RSS did for the last 60+ years, all it takes for someone to shout "Hey he is a brahmin and is fooling you. Don't you see. He will oppress you." and just like that all hard work is gone to waste.

Ya that was in my great-grandfather's time. Otherwise brahmins have been at the forefront of every single movement coming out of maharashtra. So they were the unquestionable leaders in many fields and even the RSS is a child birthed and nurtured by Maha Brahms.

Can we be rational with the Brahmin praise now!

TN is a screwed up state but anti-Brahminism was an old movement there. What is happening now is plain thuggery and should be handled as such. I think it is just a trick to get into limelight.

Brahmins are still respected or atleast not hated in most of India even if people want equal opportunities or reservations for jobs or caste based politics.

    Re: [ANTI-BRAHMIN VIOLANCE]Periyar’s Followers Have A Perverse Sense .

Thank You for your replies. In Maharashtra, anti Brahmanism is limited to political marginalisation of Brahmins by Marathas, Godse surname Brahmins were attacked in 1948 but that is all. There is no such thing as 'beef eating events' or 'burning Ram idols' in Maharashtra by influential parties as in TN politics of which revolves around anti Sanskrit, anti Brahmin and anti hinduism planks. Recently, I have seen some blogs from Karnataka too where Periyarism is being lauded with things like 'aryan indians oppressing native Kannadigas' or 'Sanskrit words in Kannada should be thrown out'. Any idea how much support they get?
