Another farm loan waiver scheme likely: Sachin Pilot - Livemint

Gurgaon: Asserting that Congress always stood for the welfare of farmers, corporate affairs minister Sachin Pilot on Sunday said the United Progresive Alliance (UPA) government would not hesitate to roll out another scheme waiving farm loans if the need arose.
Addressing a ‘Kisan Sammelan´ in this satellite city on the occasion of his late father Rajesh Pilot’s 68th birth anniversary, Pilot listed the “pro-farmer and pro-people” initiatives taken by the Congress-led coalition in the past eight years.
“We have always stood for the welfare of farmers. We know their importance and that is why the UPA Government during its previous tenure brought the Rs.70,000-crore farm loan waiver scheme. It helped lakhs of farmers in the country who have been struggling to pay back their loans,” he said.
“Farmers’ interests are paramount for us. This government will not hesitate to bring out another scheme like this for farmers. If a need arose in the future, we will not hesitate to do so,” Pilot told hundreds of people who had come from his constituency Ajmer and other parts of Rajasthan

Better put farm loan waivers in Constitution as a fundamental right.

Waive loans, they take more loans, waive them of etc. After every cycle every one is richer and happier.

You, me and other millions fools who pay taxes, loan installments, phone, electricity, water bills in full and on time. IT is deducted from my pension, while expenditure on medical bills is increasing.

More than 23 million labourers have dropped out of work scene. Is the long term effect of such schemes are being analysed or we are moving blindly in the name of populism !

Well, a productive middle class is subsidising unproductive farmers.

See this article by Sakal-Gharelu Ustad. A total opposite is happening of what really should have happened that is Urbanization.

That is the effect of MNREGA.

UPA won due to MNREGA and Farm loan waivers.

This time it will win due to MNREGA, farm loan waivers, direct cash transfer and food security bill. This country has truly gone to the dogs.

In a related note, I was talking to a few small subsistence farmers from the Hindi belt. They actively take loans, in hope that the Govt. will come out with a loan waiver scheme. If you don't give any waivers you risk losing massive votes.

They were unskilled workers, who shifted to better paying jobs. A labourer on construction is paid much higher than in agriculture. Both are informal labour, but in construction they get better terms. Skilled artisans still have high wages in cash rich agricultural areas.

Farmers are not so much unproductive than being big spenders. Do you know that a farmer in Punjab spends 25-50,000 on liquor during marriages?

Shift of labour has not translated into urbanisation but ghettoisation or slum clusters.

Punjab is a special case and won't apply to vast majority of India.

Nearly 50% of population depends on farming while they only contribute to 18% of GDP. This only indicates that it is most unproductive sector in India. Its unproductive because the farming techniques are ancient and disorganized. People do farming in bits and pieces - 1 acre of this crop and 1 acre of that crop and involves manual labour as using machinery on such small stretches in not feasible. Farming should be done on a large scale (>10 acres of same crop) with modern machinery for them to productive.

Lols. Punjab farmers take even bigger loans, spend on unproductive and go broke. They know, you and me shall be compelled to bail them out. Free irrigation water, free electricity, highly subsidised other farm inputs. Free all. Free loans, which they don't have to pay back.

If farming is a losing proposition then should quit it.

That's why I say that farming in India is unproductive. They are holding back India because of their vote power. All the money generated by service and manufacturing industry is being spent on unproductive farming instead of spending it on better infrastructure, power industry, highways, railways and other connectivity.

I hope people shooting off judgments on farmers are aware that there is drought situation in India this year. At least in Maharashtra the situation is very grim.

CAG has already prepared a report on the last Loan Waiver. CAG is not ready to put a final figure on the scam, but will be giving it's report in the Budget session of the Parliament.

Such a well thought out programme has failed to deliver because of corruption in the system.

The Direct Cash Transfer scheme needs to be stopped and the loopholes in the system need to be plugged immediately or we are going to see another scam brewing.

The last farmers loan waiver has turned out to be a scam and NGOs (who are not supposed to be in the loop) have made a killing.

One more scam to divert funds!
