Prisoner in Ajmer, Krishna says he's in Pak

A gaffe by foreign minister S M Krishna left the government red-faced in the Rajya Sabha, leading Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to launch a swift damage-control operation.

While replying to a question about steps for the release of Pakistani virologist Dr Mohammad Khalil Chisti, Krishna mixed up his facts, assuming that Chisti is an Indian national lodged in a Pakistani prison. This provoked howls of protest from the opposition.

Krishna was responding to JD (U) member Shivananad Tiwari`s endorsement of the demand that the wheelchair-bound Chishti, who has been convicted for murder and is serving his sentence in Ajmer, be released on humanitarian grounds.

Although Chisti`s case, including the fact that the Centre has taken up the matter with the Rajasthan government at the Prime Minister`s instance, has been widely reported, Krishna said, "The question raised is with reference to a particular person who is detained in Pakistan." He further said, "It is a question which needs to be considered by government of Pakistan on humanitarian grounds. He is confined to wheelchair and he is 80-plus. These are factors which mitigate. I am sure, the government of Pakistan will take a lenient view about this particular case. We will, certainly, pursue this at the level of high commissioners."

The Upper House seemed stunned by the reply before it erupted in protest. CPM`s Brinda Karat along with Prakash Javadekar, Balbir Punj and Rajiv Pratap Rudy were seen angrily protesting against the minister`s reply, forcing the Prime Minister to make a rare intervention.

Notably, Singh who had asked home minister P Chidambaram to pursue the matter of Chishti`s release with the Rajasthan government recalled the facts of the case in detail.

Krishna had suffered embarrassment earlier also when he, while addressing the United Nations General Assembly, started reading from the speech of the foreign minister of Portugal. It was a while before Krishna recognized the mistake and switched to his own text.

While his New York audience was indulgent, Krishna got no concession in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

He faced protests once again when he forgot to prefix "alleged" to Pakistan`s charges against Indian national Sarabjit Singh who has been sentenced to death for setting off bomb blasts in Lahore and Multan. The foreign minister repeated Pakistan`s chargesheet verbatim, triggering protests from Opposition members that he was merely echoing the allegations against Sarabjit. Family members of Sarabjit Singh insist that he is innocent.

As we say in Hindi Buddha Sathiya Gaya hai. He should retire gracefully while he still has some standing left.

No, make him the Governor of a state so that he will not come to politics again. Actually he was the governor of Maharashtra before he became the central minister. Send him back to the governor post.

Seems age takes its toll in his performance. He is the elder most minister among the present central ministers, even older than MMS.

The whispers around South block is that S.M Krishna,a Fulbright scholar, does not spend time reading brief notes prepared by junior bureaucrats, probably he thinks people beneath his station should not tell him what to say and what to read.Even when he addressing the join press conference with the visiting pakistani FM,speaking right after the Pak FM gave a very brief but very articulate speech,Krishna was seem mumbling words while reading from a note, interspersed by long pauses, all the while Krishna appeared to be rolling his tongue over his teeth, picking off what remained from the official brunch he had with the visiting pakistani FM.

Unlike the Fiance minister or the Home minster,Krishna's job involves lot of hobnobbing with international delegations and dignitaries, including making impromptu addresses, whether it is reading from prepared notes or articulating his thoughts,he has proven woefully inadequate in very simplest of tasks.
