Angry middle-aged men form 88% of AAP ticket-seekers - The Times of India
    TNN | Feb 7, 2014, 01.48 AM IST

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) appears to attract educated middle-aged men if snap trends are anything to go by. In a mirror of its top leadership, the average AAP ticket aspirant is a male graduate between 40 and 50 years of age. Top AAP leaders like Arvind Kejriwal, Yogendra Yadav, Sanjay Singh and Kumar Vishwas are in the forties with strong educational backgrounds.

According to initial trends, 21.3% of the applicants seeking an AAP ticket are graduates followed by 18.4% who are post-graduates, 15.5% have a law degree, 7.5% hold a management degree while 7.5% have passed Class 12.

An overwhelming number of aspirants (87.9%) are men. The candidates are predominantly between 40-50 years of age. About 174 applications have been analyzed so far though applications have been pouring in. Just Delhi has received over 1,000 applications for seven seats.

In contrast, data analyzed by Association for Democratic Reforms reveals that 43% or 3,373 candidates who contested Lok Sabha polls in 2009 were graduates and above. However, only 7% or 524 candidates were women. ADR had analyzed self-sworn affidavits submitted by 7,774 candidates contesting the election.

The party has already put out the list of candidates in 63 constituencies seeking feedback from the public. The first list for the Lok Sabha is likely to be out by February 12.

AAP's first list of Lok Sabha nominees today - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party will be releasing its first list of candidates for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on Wednesday. Sources said that the list would contain close to 40 names and would have candidates who would contest the elections against a list of 30-odd "corrupt" ministers and politicians that the party issued earlier this month.

"After a delay of almost a month, we have finally managed to build a list of suitable candidates. Most of these would be fielded against senior ministers in the current government who are the epitome of corruption. However, it is only the first list we are releasing on Wednesday. Some more will follow in the coming days," said sources.

In what is referred to as the 'super-30', the list of allegedly corrupt politicians against whom candidates might be announced on Wednesday include Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi, vice chairperson Rahul Gandhi, BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, current cabinet ministers including Kapil Sibal and P Chidambaram and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav among others. The list may also contain candidates from some Delhi seats.

Among well known AAP members, advocate HS Phoolka has applied for a ticket from Ludhiana, Ilyas Azmi who would like to contest from Lakhimpuri Kheri and Kumar Vishwas who has submitted his form for Amethi. Mayank Gandhi and Meera Sanyal have submitted their candidatures from Mumbai.

Claiming that they had been inundated with applications, the party stopped accepting forms for more than 200 Lok Sabha seats from February 8. These included all seven seats from Delhi, 75 seats from Uttar Pradesh, 10 from Haryana, Chandigarh and Puducherry, both of which have only one seat. It did say that applications for these seats would be accepted "in special circumstances", probably leaving the door open for last minute decisions which could also include the nomination of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.
