HYDERABAD: Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi said his brother Akbaruddin Owaisi would return from London and "surrender before law" in the case of alleged hate speeches.

"He will come and surrender before law. We are not the ones to run away," Asad Owaisi told a public meeting Saturday night in Ranga Reddy district.

The police have directed Akbar Owaisi, who is away in London, to appear before Nirmal town police in Adilabad district Monday and at the Nizamabad police station Tuesday in connection with two cases booked against him for delivering alleged hate speeches last month.

Osmania University police in Hyderabad, who registered a case against Akbar on the direction of a city court, have issued notice to the legislator to appear before them Jan 10.

Akbar, who is leader of the MIM in the Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly, is understood to have informed police that he would return to Hyderabad soon and make himself available for questioning.

Director General of Police V. Dinesh Reddy said police would wait for the MIM leader's return for two to three days before initiating action.

MIM leaders were tight-lipped over reports that Akbar would return to Hyderabad Monday.

Some leaders indicated that he might seek time till next week to appear before police.

Addressing a public meeting in Tandur town as part of United Muslim Action Committee's campaign against the Congress government, Asad Owaisi clarified that his party was not against Hindus.

"Our fight is not against Hindus. Our fight is against BJP and (chief minister) Kiran Kumar Reddy," said Asad, member of parliament from Hyderabad.

Asad made the clarification even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its frontal organisations continued protests across the state, especially in the Telangana region, to condemn Akbar's alleged remarks against the majority community.

"We don't have to learn the lesson of patriotism from the criminals of Babri Masjid demolition and Gujarat riots. India is our country and we will continue to shed our blood for the country," Asad said.

Targeting Kiran Kumar Reddy, the MIM chief alleged that the chief minister had a secret understanding with the BJP to weaken the MIM.

"Will the Congress government have booked cases against Akbar if we had not withdrawn support?" Asad asked the crowd.

He wondered why Akbar was booked 22 days after his speech in Nizamabad and 11 days after he addressed a public meeting in Nirmal.

Asad said he would not comment on Akbar's speech as the matter was before the court.

"We have full faith in the judiciary and Akbar will get justice," he said.

HYDERABAD: Hours before Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leader Akbaruddin Owaisi appears before investigators in Nirmal, Adilabad, for his alleged hate speech, police claim that they are in a catch-22 situation. They neither have first-hand evidence nor the necessary wherewithal to authenticate Akbaruddin's video floating on the internet. This is being taken as a clear indication by analysts that Owaisi will go scot free. Meanwhile, the MIM MLA is likely to arrive in the city in the early hours of Monday and later proceed to Nirmal to face the investigators.

Investigators claim that they are left with no option, but rely on eye-witnesses since the Adilabad and Nizamabad district police had not even bothered to videograph the proceedings of MIM Jalsa. As a result, they are now at the mercy of media personnel and others who attended the meeting. And in all probability, none of the MIM activists might depose against their leader.

"It is a fact that police had not recorded Akbaruddin Owaisi's speech. Also, at the same time we cannot rely on YouTube video, since it will be secondary. Instead, we will use the footage captured by personnel who attended the meeting. We think that it will stand good enough as evidence since the video was taken when the MIM Jalsa was underway,'' an officer, who is part of the investigation team in Nirmal, told TOI.

Forensic experts said in the given situation it would be a challenge to prove lip synchronization with the voice of Akbaruddin in the video. Besides, establishing the location where Akbaruddin gave the speech would be another uphill task.

"The person who recorded the video himself would have to depose to prove from which camera he had shot the proceedings on the day of offence," a senior officer said. Caught on the wrong foot, police have decided to rely on eye-witnesses in the given situation, but doubts persist whether anyone would courageously stand up and testify against Akbaruddin for his hate speeches in Nirmal and Nizamabad.

The Andhra Pradesh Forensic Science Laboratory (APFSL) is still in the process of procuring advanced audio-video voice detection tools, which could address several lacunae, as the existing tools are reportedly not completely foolproof.

"We will shortly procure advanced tools for audio, video, voice forensic at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore. It is false to say that the existing system is not foolproof,'' APFSL director O Narasimha Murthy told TOI.

Nirmal, Nizamabad II Town and Osmania University police are relying on footage captured by media personnel and YouTube video as evidence to show that Akbaruddin Owaisi gave insidious speeches.

Authentication proves vital when the MLA might deny making such statements.

Advocate K Karunasagar and Mangalhat corporator Raja Singh, who filed petitions against Akbaruddin for his hate speech, would depose before the Nampally court on Monday. Raja Singh is a well known Hindutva activist.

if we can use voice sampling and analysis as a conclusive proof agaisnst 26/11 guys why can't GOI use same tech against this guy. You do not need anyother evidence once voice samples are analised. This is a blatant attempt to let go this guy.
