Apology not good enough, Deoband’s new chief faces protest wave

Express news service Posted: Tue Jan 25 2011 New Delhi:

An agitation that began on Sunday evening by about 30 senior students of the Darul Uloom, Deoband, demanding the removal of the Vice Chancellor was called off Monday evening. The teachers at the university promised the students that their demand would be placed before the managing committee.
The 21-member managing committee, which had 17 members present and voting, elected Maulana Ghulam Mohammed as the VC on January 10. Though the committee is scheduled to meet only twice a year, it is not clear whether a special meeting will be called in light of the controversy.

The agitation, reportedly by about 30 senior students, began around 7 pm on Sunday. They closed the gates of the seminary, which remained shut till Monday evening. According to some reports, two students received minor injuries in the commotion that ensued on Sunday. Police were not called. Unconfirmed reports said nine students were rusticated on Monday after the agitation disrupted classes and life at the Darul Uloom.

Today, the new VC held at least 20 meetings with delegations of students, maulvis and residents of Deoband and went outside the Darul Uloom too. He addressed students in the morning and announced that he would keep his doors open and post himself at the masjid “between the evening prayers and the last of the five namazes” to would answer queries from teachers and students.

The VC, the first from outside Deoband to occupy the post, was quoted in some interviews as saying that the community should leave the 2002 Gujarat riots behind and that Muslims did not face discrimination in Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s Gujarat.

Those close to the new Mohtamim (VC) say the groups and families that feel they have lost control of the institution and, consequently, the clout outside have turned the heat on Wastanavi.

The issue, some say, have brought together the rival factions at the Jamiat Ulema e Hind—a large organisation of clerics—led by Rajya Sabha MP Mahmud Madani and his uncle, Arshad Madani.

But those close to the Madanis say Arshad Madani is also related to Wastanavi—his son is married to the new Mohtamim’s daughter—and this is not about a family or control of resources or positions.

Wastanavi, who hails from Surat, has been a resident of Maharashtra’s Akkal-Kua for the last 33 years. On Saturday, which was his first day in Deoband after being elected on January 10, he had sought to clear the air. He hit back at his critics, saying that his comments had been distorted.

“I cannot forgive Narendra Modi, Allah will not forgive Narendra Modi, the common man will not forgive Narendra Modi. No one can forgive Narendra Modi...We will take revenge on Modi. We will pray to Allah for this,” he had said on Saturday.

His alleged comments have led to widespread outrage. Akhtar ul Wasey, director, Islamic Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia says: “We respect his commitment to modern education but the remarks on Modi are bound to cause confusion. If even Vajpayee never gave Modi a clean chit, how can one of us say the environment is okay under him?”

Those close to him ask why a newspaper report is given the status of “the Quran or Hadees by these protestors and the word of a solemn man who is our own being decried ?” Says Maulana Muzamil, president of the Deoband Old Boys Association: “It would have made sense to critique the new Mohtamim on actions he would have performed as the new head—but before he has even done anything, holding these protests appears motivated and unjustified.”

A heckuva lot of commotion over nothing.

Let's see what happened here: About "30" (senior) students of the Darul Uloom, a school of about 3500 students, protested against a weak and feeble man for his comments on Narendra Modi, for which 9 were immediately suspended. The students are all back in class, and school is back to normal.

As always, our media wants something useful to chirp about.

Does it mean that reality should not be recognised?

He did not say Modi was an angel.

Modi is, infact, an angel if you are from a state like Andhra Pradesh where we have CMs getting changed, ministers fighting over berths, state-divisions being discussed, politicians mouthing anab-shanab, , strikes/dharnas/bandhs becoming a regularity, and no development or growth whatsoever.

You seem to make him appear a cherub!

I concede he has done much for Gujarat and I await the Supreme Court's verdict before passing any opinions.

    Sir,
Modi has done tremendous good to Gujarat. I ask you just one question, : " Who is the best successful politician in powerful position(CM,PM, Central ministers, State ministers) in India rightnow?"

To me the answer is Modi and others are lagging behind by a lot.
