Why the delay in opening Amma cinema theaters in Chennai?

CHENNAI: Chennaiites will have to wait for a few more months for the launch of Amma cinema theaters, announced by Mayor Saidai Duraisamy during the Corporation budget in February, as the civic body is still looking for suitable halls and other buildings which could be converted into cinema halls.

"It will take another month to finalise buildings, and once that's done, the theatres will be open to the public soon," said a civic body official who didn't want to be identified.

The corporation is looking to convert the existing auditoriums and unused corporation buildings that will best fit the bill to screen movies with subsidized tickets. A ticket at an Amma theater will be priced below Rs 25.

"Most cinema theatres operate in commercial complexes, so ticket prices are too high. Cinema helps migrant labourers get over their depression," said the budget statement of the corporation.

This is getting ridiculous....so if some film producer declines to sell a film to the govt, will they face the wrath of Amma? Or maybe it will be used to screen older mgr/jaya movies and brainwash the public.

This is aimed at those many films that donot see the light of the day. Many films donot get theaters for release and this causes a lot of stress in the industry. Now if there are theaters that can be accessed so easily the audience and the cinema people will be benefited. Also this will bring down the high costs involved in the film making (like more salary to minimum guarantee stars and the need to adverise more) and will bring down the theater ticket prices. Young and radical (not politically!) film makers now can make films without the risk of not getting a distributor. Also majority of the Theaters in TN are operated by the DMK family, Now JJ has come up with one more master plan to take the fight right into the DMK fortress... This is same as the Govt Cable corporation which is directly aimed at breaking the monopoly of the Sun network in the cable distribution and Television networks.

Edit: Some of the Big distribution and production houses in TN belong to the DMK family, the Red Giant Movies of M.K.Stalin's Son, the Cloud Nine movies of M.K.Alagiri's son, the Sun Pictures of the Maran Family.
