he word Shishpar, originates from the Indo-Iranian word
used for sharp edged mountains in the Hindu Kush, the
Shishpar mace was introduced by the Delhi Sultanate and
continued to be utilized until the 18th century by Deccan Sultanates, Marathas and Nizam.

Featured above is Indian version shishpar (flanged mace), all steel construction, with eight knife edged, hinged flanges, 18th-19th century, 26 inches long; improvised by Marathas, who called it Gurj.

18th century Maratha Tabar (axe) with in built matchlock gun; length 30 5/8". Very beautiful and artistic piece, now owned by an European collector. Tabar is a persian word. Indian/ Maratha word for the same is Kurhad/ Parshu.

सदर चिलखत, शिरस्त्राण आणि शस्त्रे हे रशियातील सेंट पीटर्सबर्ग शहरातील हर्मिटाज संग्रहालयात असल्याचे आम्ही परवा टाकले होते. त्याचे समोरून काढलेले छायाचित्र वर देत आहोत.

पेजच्या बर्याच चाहत्यांनी हे पहिले बाजीराव पेशव्यांचे चिलखत आहे का? अशी विचारणा केली आहे. सध्या गाजत असलेल्या बीजीराव मस्तानी चित्रपटात हुबेहुब याची नकल करण्यात आली आहे.

तर सदर ऐवज पहिले बाजीराव पेशवे यांचे नाही हे नक्की. पहिले बाजीराव हे काही विलासी नव्हते शिवाय मराठा साम्राज्य हे नुकतेच औरंगजेबाच्या ग्रहणातून तावून सुलाखून निघाले होते. एवढा विलासी आणि कलात्मक जिन्नस बनवून घेण्यास उसंत आणि खर्च करण्याचा काळ नव्हता.

हा पानिपत दरम्यान किंवा त्या नंतरच्या काळातला आहे असे संग्रहालयाच्या नोंदीत नमूद केले आहे. पानिपत नंतर इंदूर, ग्वाल्हेर, बडोदे, धार ईत्यादी गाद्या स्वतंत्र झाल्या. मराठा साम्राज्य वैभवाच्या शिखरावर होते. त्याकाळात असे विलासी व वैभवसंपन्न जिन्नस बनवले गेले. यात इंदूर आणि ग्वाल्हेर आघाडीवर होते.

आता आपण वरील जीरेटोपावर लक्ष घालू. अत्यंत कलात्मक आणि नाजूक नक्षी केलेले सदर शिरस्त्राण आहे. याला turquoise अर्थात फिरोजा रत्ने जडवलेली आहेत. मुस्लिम समाजामध्ये सदर रत्नाला खूप मान्यता आहे. युध्दात हे रत्न रक्षण करते अशी धारणा असल्यामुळे ते घालण्याचा प्रघात होता.

पानिपतानंतर मुघल बादशाह मराठ्यांचा आश्रित होऊन बाहूले बनला. १७७१ साली परांगदा शहा आलम यास महादजी शिंदे यांनी तख्तावर पुन्हा बसवले. बादशहाने वकील ए मुतालिक आणि अमीर उल उमरा अशी पदे आणि बिरुदावल्या महादजींना बहाल केल्या. ते बादशहा खालोखाल सर्वात महत्वाचे व्यक्ती ठरले. सदर चिलखत आणि शिरस्त्राणांचा संबंध त्यांच्याशी असण्याची दाट शक्यता आहे. फिरोजा रत्न जडीत जीरेटोप कदाचित ते मुघल बादशहाने महादजींना दिलेला नजराणा असावा. याचे संकेत देते. शस्त्रास्त्र तज्ञ आणि संग्रहालय यांचे मतही त्याच दिशेने आहे.

टीप: वरील माहिती हे आमचे वैयक्तिक विश्लेषण असून ते महादजी शिंदेंचे असल्याचे संशोधना अंती सिध्द व्हायचे आहे. पण, ते कुण्या मराठा सरदाराचे असल्याचे कुणाचेच दुमत नाही.

रशियातील सेंट पीटर्सबर्ग शहरात जगप्रसिध्द व अत्यंत विशाल हर्मिटज संग्रहालय. तेथील आशियाई विभागात 'इंडियन कलेक्शन' संग्रहात हा मराठा शिरस्त्राण 'जीरेटोप', चिलखत व शस्त्रास्त्रे आहेत.

हा चिलखत कोणाचा आहे याची नेमकी माहिती उपलब्ध नाही. हा १७६० साल नंतरच्या काळातील आहे एवढा निष्कर्ष निघाला आहे. हा चिलखत जगातील सर्वोत्कृष्ट असल्याचे तज्ञांचे मत आहे. याचे वैशिष्ट्य म्हणजे हा 'चेन मेल आर्मर' (वर्तुळाकारी रिंगांच्या साखळी पध्दतीचा) प्रकारातील अत्यंत बारीक रिंगांनी बनवला आहे. एवढं बारकाईने काम केलेले दूसरे चिलखत नाही. मराठ्यांचे ऐश्वर्य व सामर्थ्य याचे हे प्रतीक आहे.

याचे शिरस्त्राण अर्थात जीरेटोप हे ही तशाच बनावटीचे आहेत. ही पध्दत ओटोमन पध्दतीची असून मराठ्यांनी नंतर ती अंगीकारली. मराठा प्रकारात वर शिखेकडे, शेंडीकडे ही मागे वळणारी आहे. शत्रूच्या शस्त्राची आघात बसला तरी जीरेटोप जागचे हलत नसे, त्याचा तोल सहजासहजी जात नसे. हे मराठा शैलीचे वैशिष्ट्य होय.

1751 North Indian Maratha daggers having Rajput arms influence

Jamdaad is a sword with perforated teeth. This is a serpertine variant of the same and was used by 18th century Maratha sardars.

The Shinde clan of Gwalior used this variant as they believed they were Nagvanshi clan. The most famous use of this type of sword was made by Jankoji Shinde to behead Kutubshah and avenge the brutal killing of Dattaji Shinde in the battle of Kunjpura in 1760.

Tegha sword was popular among the North Indian expeditied Marathas. This sword has Mughal and Sikh influences. It is broader at the tip; fully sharp down the outside of the blade and double edged at the tip.

17th Century Maratha Cavalry Bichhwa. Bichhwa derives its name from 'bichhu' - hindi or 'vinchu' marathi, meaning a scorpion. It is a double edged blade shaped like a scorpion's tail. It is a stealth weapon hiden under the sleeves of the hand.

विजयनगरच्या सम्राटांचा ऐतिहासिक खंजर!

१५६५ च्या तालीकोटाच्या निर्णायक लढाईत बहामनी राजवटीतून फुटलेल्या ५ दक्खनी शाह्यांच्या सुलतानांनी एकजूट करून राम देवरायचा परभाव केला आणि विजयनगरची सत्ता संपुष्टात आली.

शाही लुटीतून सदर खंजर विजापूरच्या आदिलशाहच्या वाट्यास गेला. आदिलशाह बादशाह दरबारात तख्तावर बसताना सदर खंजर आपल्या हातात वागवत असत असे तत्कालीन आदिलशाही चित्रांवरून दिसून येते.

हे खंजर पोलादाचे असून, दुधारी आहे. त्याला पितळेची मुठ असून, नक्षीकाम भारदस्त आहे. मुठीवर शारभाचे पुतळे घडवलेले आहेत.

सध्या हे खंजर लंडनच्या क्रीस्तीज संग्रहालयात आहे.

इंदूर संस्थानचे राजे यशवंतराव होळकर यांनी जानेवारी १७९९ साली स्वतःला राज्याभिषेक करवून घेतला; मग त्याने मे १७९९ मध्ये उज्जैन जिंकून घेतले व जानेवारी १८०० साली सदर तलवार बनवून घेतली. मे १८०२ साली त्याने दुसर्या बाजीराव पेशव्याने इंग्रजांसोबत केलेला संरक्षणाचा करार नामंजूर करत पुण्यावर चाल केली, ति हीच तलवार हाती धरून.

सध्या लंडनच्या विक्टोरिया आणि अल्बर्ट संग्रहालयात आहे

The sword of Yashwantrao Holkar, ruler of Indore crowned himself an independent King in 1799 and captured Ujjain in May 1799. In January 1800 he got this sword made to suit his kingship. in May 1802 he marched to Pune after refusing to accept the Subsidiary Alliance forged by the Peshwa with the British East India Company with this sword in his hand.

It is currently housed at Victoria and Albert Museum, London
