Amitabh Bachchan says Kasab safest person in India, irks Maharashtra CM

Maharashtra C.M. Ashok Chavan has reacted strongly to Big B’s remarks on Kasab, who said that a year after 26/11, the safest person in the country remains to be Kasab, on whom the government has so far spent Rs 31 crore to provide security.

Addressing a public function organised by South Asia Free Media (SAFMA) on Saturday, the CM said “It is sad that celebrities feel so. Our law enforcing agencies have nabbed the main accused in the terror attack. Now law will take its own course and the court will deliver its verdict. It is the responsibility of the state government to ensure safety of the accused,'' added Chavan.

Amitabh's statements reflects the feeling of the nation. Recently, a person who was in the Taj hotel during 26/11 asked Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, on a news channel, as to why so much of money was being spent on Kasab and what the government had done to ensure the security of fellow Indians if it was doing so much to protect Kasab.

Other people have commented that increasing the quality and quantity of weaponry to police may actually harm the citizens given the widespread corruption in the police force, arm twisting by corrupt politicians and the low level of trust the average citizen has on the police force in providing justice. But is the police entirely to blame? A recent article said that the special security forces' personnel had a take home salary of around Rs 5,000 a month or about US$25 a week. Significant reform is required to stem continuing deterioration in the police system. Take for example Shiv Sena roughing up a Christian Nun at a school- does anyone expect any justice from the police in this case? How can the average citizen feel secure in such an environment? Wouldnt it have been better to hang Kasab without a trial, by special presidential decree and instead use the money to serve the police reform process?
