Despite a sanctioned strength of 42 squadrons, the Indian Air Force is grappling with a shortfall of fighter jets and is making do with just 33. If that wasn’t a bad news, there has been an increase in the number of accidents in the last financial year.

In 2016-17, there were 11 accidents involving fighter jets. What’s worse is that there was an increase in the number over the previous year. In 2015-16 there were 8 accidents without any loss of life. Shockingly, there were 33 deaths this year. The information was provided by Minister of State for Defence Dr Subhash Bhamre in the parliament.

In March a Su-30 Mki air-superiority fighter was lost and the same day a Chetak helicopter crashed and toppled. In February, a C-130 transport plane was damaged in Ladakh. In October last year, a Mi-17 crashed after take off near Badrinath. In the same month, a Jaguar trainer was lost.

But, the worse disaster was the loss of an An-32 over the Bay of Bengal, with 29 personnel onboard.

Thankfully, 123 LCA Tejas fighters are scheduled to join the fleet to replace the Mig-21 and Mig-27 squadrons. Additionally, 36 Rafale fighters have been contracted and the IAF is also looking for a new single-engine fighter.

i liked the above but you know what i meant .... i don't really like what happened but the highlighting of it by @lcafanboy

honestly, it is atrocious and this probllem has been going on for decades .... it seems that no one cares for the pilot's families and what about the replacement of pilots ...... in fact it was much better to get rafael or other choices earlier ....we have been penny wise pound foolish ... saving on hardware purchase and losing such a large number of pilots

That's one more thing to discuss and a bigger issue. Planes are replaceable human (pilots) life is not. And above all pilots training cost is as much as these planes.

We have to face the facts, so that we can find solutions, hence highlighting it is necessary.

According to statistical data available from multiple sources the Indian Air Force has the dubious distinction of having one of the highest crash rate in the world. No other Air Force comes close. This is really unacceptable. Some heads should roll over this, and frankly this insane crash rate is making the IAF the laughing stock of airforces around the world.

Here are some facts:
  • India, using mostly Russian aircraft, has an accident rate of 6-7 per 100,000 hours flown (compared to 4-5 for all NATO air forces.)
  • The Indian rate had been over ten for many years, and it is still that high, and often higher than other nations (including Russia and China), that use Russian aircraft designs.
  • F-15s and F-16s have an accident rate of 3-4 per 100,000 flight hours.
  • Most of the crashes have been attributed to pilot error and a lack of training. But the major factor pointed out by the Russians is the fact that we insisted on using poorly manufactured local parts. After several hundred Migs had crashed, the IAF blamed the manufacturer of a faulty fuel pump!

So, for want of a nail, the battle was lost! We are penny wise and pound foolish. We always opt for the cheapest stuff by following the age old British tender process. The quality of spare parts be damned. And who cares for the life of pilots?

does anyone have comparative stats for American, British, Russian , Chinese and pakistani air forces?

India has a huge air force and even though it's heavily antiquated even as modernization happens you will see many mishaps for the years to come as planes become even more complicated. .

One solution ... build autonomous UAV drones or do a JV. Aura is in development ... hope so it delivers.

I am betting that it would be used to drop SDBs on launch pads.

We need a seperate air command to do covert ops, as airforce has recently become more cocky than usual. Monopolistic philosophy being practised at the pride of our country is pathetic IMHO.

Any source of this data ... you said statistics ... now I am fired up. These are interesting facts indeed. But if we are just going by facts than we might be subjected to systematic "controlled biases".

I would rather like to ask the "Hard questions":

1. Is it because our training quality is eroding? Poor management practices?

2. Or selection criterion of future pilots fail to assess whether they will do good or bad at flying a multi million dollar plane?

3. Or leadership has some serious loopholes, one being elites moving to higher chain of command(through corruption or some other means) and good leaders aren't being selected?

These are just few I can come up with.

Already short of planes IAF? The solution is simple, place an order for more and more LCAs instead of hankering for phoren maal you righteous folk.

But no, you'll be happy to spend next 20 years ironing out the kinks in Roosi/Amreeki/Bartaanvi/Fraancisi maal rather than support and nurture your own.

It's painful to see this sort of apathy from our forces for indigenous products.

These statistics have been culled from a number of official sources.

The main reasons for aircraft malfunctions are wear and tear on air frames and engines especially the antique over half century old MiG-21s (except the upg BiS) which have long passed their fly by date. The other reason is the suspect quality of spares especially for the Russian aircraft which are being outsourced from various agencies after a normal tender process. Whether strict comprehensive quality checks are being instituted is the question.

Pilot error is another issue but these are few and far between.

These are purely undercurrent vendetta based theme of time events. It's a loss of time indeed.
