They do use the term tuk tuk in SL. I think the term has come from Bangkok. The tuk tuks there are different and not like our auto rickshaws.I am not sure but I don't think they call it tuktuk in sri lanka. the news segment is for western/western educated viewers so the use of tuktuk is understandable. bbc for example says tuktuk when doing a program on India although locals don;t use the term.
In SL though Bajaj and TVS autos rule the roost. Tuk tuks. They charge a bloody bomb. A 10km ride starts at SL 500-600!! Luckily we were told by a local to bargain with them. We use to go that distance for SL 250-300!!!
