Akhilesh Yadav attends big Bollywood night at Saifai, critics raise Muzaffarnagar pitch

Saifai, Uttar Pradesh: Unfazed by all-round criticism for its sheer scale and extravagance at a time when his government was being pilloried for being insensitive to Muzaffarnagar riot victims, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav made it a point to watch performances by Bollywood top draws Salman Khan, Deepika Padukone and Madhuri Dixit, which brought down the curtains on the fortnight-long 'Saifai Mahotsav' on Wednesday night. (See Pics)

Seven jets were chartered to fly the Bollywood entourage - including Ranveer Singh, Mallika Sherawat, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan - into Saifai, the ancestral village of the Yadav clan, to take part in the grand finale of the jamboree.

Wary of criticism from the media, organizing committee chairman Dharmendra Yadav, who is also an MP and Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav's nephew, said reporters would be allowed into the show, but barred them from carrying their cameras, to prevent live telecast.

The festival, part of an annual ritual, was into its 15th edition, but it had come under heavy shelling from the Opposition parties as it was held against the backdrop of the controversy over the relief camps for Muzaffarnagar riot victims, and their plight. As many as 34 children are reported to have died in these temporary shelters after failing to withstand the bitter cold that has swept the region. The state government has drawn flak for trying to drive the inmates of these camps back to their homes.

"They have lost all human values as they are celebrating at a time when so many kids have died in Muzaffarnagar," BSP leader Sudhindra Bhadoria said.

SP leaders, however, remain defiant, and continue to defend the festival. "I want to clarify again that UP government has conducted Saifai Mahotsav to promote arts and culture," minister Rajendra Chaudhary said.

Organisers are tightlipped about the budget, but critics have panned it for drawing heavily from the state's coffers.

Ministers and MLAs' 'study tours' slammed as states battle riots, drought

Lucknow: Even as thousands of people continue to suffer due to lack of proper arrangements by the Uttar Pradesh government to fight chilling cold, the ruling Samajwadi Party continues to party in Saifai, the ancestral village of party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

Bollywood superstars like Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Alia Bhat, Sara Khan and Soha Ali Khan performed in the annual Saifai Mahotsav on Wednesday.

Besides, the Bollywood big wigs, two dozen other TV actors, comedians also performed at Saifai, which has become a major attraction for the people of the region including Etawah, Mainpuri, Firozabad, Shikohabad and Agra.

It is organised every year in memory of a late nephew of Mulayam Singh Yadav and is attended by film stars, politicians, corporate honchos, ministers and officials.

Last year, Hrithik Roshan performed at the event.

All this comes at a time when the SP leadership has come under attack over holding the annual Safai Mahotsav at a time when hundreds of victims of Muzaffarnagar riots were living in difficult circumstances in relief camps and others are suffering due to extreme weather conditions.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, however, defended the two-week long "Saifai Mahotsav" that commenced on December 26, calling it a Samajwadi tradition and said he is well aware that the event will come under the scanner of the media.

"I know you have not come here to cover the festival, but instead you have come here to show in one window that people are suffering in the camps and on the other, you will show the festivities," the Samajwadi Party (SP) leader told reporters at Safai in Etawah district, about 250 km from Lucknow.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh condemned the staging of the event and slammed the SP government for "demolishing few relief camps" meant for the riot victims of Muzaffarnagar and Shamli.

Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma was among others who attacked the SP leadership over the annual event. "While children are dying daily in these relief camps, Yadav is organising Saifai Mahotsav and programmes by dancers from foreign countries. He should immediately postpone Saifai Mahotsava.

Akhilesh is making fun while children are dying. The curse of these children will finish him," Verma, who has been always critical of the Yadav family," Verma said.

Interestingly, the Samajwadi Party government today sent a delegation of MLAs from Uttar Pradesh on a government-sponsored international study tour.

This comes after Karnataka government sent its MLAs on a similar tour abroad.

Over 20 MLAs left early morning on a tour, which covers five countries in 20 days, as per reports. The MLAs will travel to Turkey, Greece, UK, UAE and Netherlands.

The delegation consists of current and former MLAs. The trip comes even as questions are being raised on how the state can afford such a trip while the state hasn't done enough for the Muzaffarnagar riot victims.

The tour is led by Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan. "It's a study tour. You said it yourself. Shouldn't leaders go out and study," Azam Khan said.

I genuinely believe that it is totally moral to kill Akhilesh Yadav. The people of UP should storm the festival and burn it to the ground, and along with it, Akhilesh Yadav and his father.

    Very shameful...

Tells how cheap is this Sell-Man Khan who cries of humanity and charity. He is a proven bad character and murderer.

Also what to say about Madhuri... throw some coins and she would dance. Slept with everyone in Bollywood including spot boys.

Leave all others as they are just those who dance in marriages.

For all those Muslims... see the real face of Mulla-yam and his son Akhilesh who fool you in the name of votes and made a dance bar on the dead bodies of Muslims.

2006 dalit rape case: UP govt seeks withdrawal of case against minister

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has recommended the withdrawal of a rape case against one of its ministers.

The home department has written to the Bijnor district magistrate that after a careful study of the case, it found the charges levelled against Stamp and Registration Minister Manoj Kumar Paras to be untrue.

It also directed the district administration to ensure that Paras gets a legal defence in the court.

In 2006, a Dalit woman alleged that the Samajwadi Party minister, a legislator from Nagina, and his accomplices raped her at his home when she went there in connection with a ration shop promised to her.

Police lodged the case against the minister and others Jan 15, 2007 after the woman approached the chief judicial magistrate court.

A Bijnor court ordered the attachment of the minister’s property but he took a stay from the high court.

The woman’s lawyer said Thursday that he would oppose the state’s application for withdrawal of the case when it comes up for hearing Jan 17.

The minister is currently on a five-nation “study tour” with seven other state minister and 17 legislators.

We too are affected by this attitude of theirs - suffering a decade of congress rule.

Reminds me of what Dr. Swamy said - "Muslims vote as a block for the congress. The hindu vote is fragmented, my intention is to make the Hindu's vote as a block for the BJP".

And Manoj Paras the guy who raped a dalit in 2006 is on this effing foreign tour. I only hope this sex offender controls himself and doesn't embarrass the nation when abroad.

Good to see some villagers like Mulayam and Akhilesh enjoying a fashionable mujra, while UP burns!

This is the typical UP attitude where the privileged (feudal lords) caring two hoots for their people indulgence in their frivolity and enjoyment and feel that they have done their bit for God and their people!

No offence meant to any UP poster since their are also good people in UP, but the feudalism is most heartbreaking.

And I have been in the UP countryside and experienced such activities happening where they do so without any quirk on their conscience and think instead that it is their birthright!!

Azam is out to see how the Muslims are being treated in these countries and comparing it with India.

I am sure he thinks the is doing a great service to the Muslims of India, for whom his heart bleeds as they bleed in the camps!
