Pune : Maharashtra's deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar today ridiculed a two-month-long protest by a farmer demanding the release of water froma dam for his parched field. In a shocking statement, Mr Pawar said,"There is this person from Solapur, sitting on hunger strike for 55 days demanding water be released from the dam. But where are we going to get water from? Should we urinate? And when we are not getting water to drink even urine is not coming easily."

Mr Pawar is also the nephew of Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Commenting on the shortage of electricity, Mr Pawar made another controversial remark. "I have also come to know that since there is a shortage of electricity in Maharashtra, the population is increasing," Mr Pawar said on Saturday while speaking at a rally in Indapur, Pune.

He should have tried to do something earlier by constructing water harvesting structures.

Looks like he isn't going to be able to maintain the support the old Pawar has been able to gather.

    A rather unfortunate statement.

However, it does show his class and upbringing!

Vandana Shiva has already explained that the water issue is because of poor water management and the over indulgence in water consumption by the growing of sugarcane, a commodity totally controlled by politicians. Mr Sharad Pawar is the biggest enchilada in the sugar belt and he owes his power to the immense funds that these sugar cooperatives bestow upon him or so it is said!

I don't find the statement funny. Such is the attitude in the state, no wonder farmers commit suicide in Maharashtra.

    That will not be safe.

At the very thought he may release his bodily water in his urinary tract that may fill the Pacific Ocean and the world will be inundated!

There may not be any water water in the reservoirs, but the remark is insensitive, arrogant and cruel.

Sitting in the capital Mumbai, these suckers have no idea what people are going through in the far off parts of the state. Oh wait, I think they don't even have on idea what people are going through in and around Mumbai itself. Come monsoons, for example, and Ghorbandar Road looks like a battlefield peppered with mortar attack holes.

He earned it. A urinal named after politician Ajit Pawar | NDTV.com
    [IMG]
Jalna: He has called it "the biggest mistake of his political life" but Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, isn't being forgiven for mocking the water and power problems defeating the state's farmers.

A urinal in Jalna, a part of Marathwada mangled by drought, has been named after the leader, retribution for his asking sarcastically "should we urinate" when discussing the poverty of water.

A poster on the urinal, put up by Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party, says: "AJIT URINAL, Aam Aadmi Party Jalna protests Ajit Pawar's statement of offering urine to the parched, drought stricken people."

At a rally on the weekend, Mr Pawar had ridiculed a man who has spent nearly two months on a hunger strike, demanding that the state release water for his farm and others.

"There is this person from Solapur, sitting on hunger strike for 55 days demanding water be released from the dam. But where are we going to get water from? Should we urinate? And when we don't have water to drink, it's hard to pass urine as well," he had said.

What is more offending (and probably less scrutinized in the media) is the other part of his statement.
"I have come to know that the population is increasing in the state since there is a shortage of electricity in Maharashtra. What other work people have when the lights are off."
He mocked the poor of his State so effortlessly. Appalling .. :tsk:

Well one can understand his frustration over no water in dams. But people on ground are far more frustrated than him and surely do not deserve ridiculed this way. Rest assured, nothing will happen to him or his party over this issue. He apologized but then why create controversy and then apologize?
