Air China magazine warns London visitors to avoid ethnic minority areas
Haze Fan | Special to CNBC

Even for China, where companies have struggled with race issues in their marketing previously, the latest inflight magazine from the country's flagship airline will likely come as a shocker.

Air China's Wings of China carries a long feature on visiting London, with almost a third of the magazine dedicated to tourist attractions in Britain's capital and other famous towns such as Oxford. The main article, titled "London the city of 'hat tricks'," covers Brits' apparent fondness for all kinds of hats.

Then, after a section on transport options and lifestyle and cultural activities in London, Wings of China offers some "Tips from Air China."

"London is generally a safe place to travel, however precautions are needed when entering areas mainly populated by Indians,Pakistanis and black people," China's flagship carrier advises. "We advise tourists not to go out alone at night, and females always to be accompanied by another person when traveling."

"Tips from Air China" on safety when visiting London

The advice is at odds with the London promoted by its Mayor Sadiq Khan, a Brit with Pakistani parents, who in July launched a #LondonisOpen campaign and frequently blogs about his favorite places to eat and drink in his South London Indian-Pakistani neighborhood of Tooting.

Meanwhile, Britain is an increasingly popular destination for Chinese tourists. According to government agency VisitBritain, more than 270,000 Chinese visited Britain in 2015, up 46 percent on the previous year. This was after the number of Chinese tourists doubled in the five years to 2014. Chinese visitors spent 586 million pounds ($786 million) in total in Britain in 2015, up 18 percent on 2014.

And in January, Britain launched a new, two-year, multiple-entry visa in a bid to woo even more Chinese visitors to its shores, following changes made in 2015 that allowed tourists and business travelers to apply for both British and European visas in a single process.

Chinese companies have been criticized previously for their depictions of various races. In May, a Chinese laundry detergent-maker apologized for an advertisement that showed an Asian woman shoving a dirt-smeared black man into a washing machine, only for him to emerge as a clean Asian man.

Some Western media called the ad, which ran on Chinese social media platforms, "the most racist commercial ever."

Air China did not respond to CNBC's request for comment on its London safety tips.

I am sure the most educated writer for Air China also able to define the one China principle to all Chinese in London. Like there is no difference between Indians and Pakis ... Most educated writers will say such things when they realise there is no one China in London when they roam the streets clueless but looking posh like they are someone because they are there.she doesn't represent the wiser Chinese ... Probably its the smell of liberty and observations of such in London. Long distance relationship !!

chinese are getting creamed in Europe!!
Thousands of French Chinese protest in Paris against racist attacks
Several thousand Chinese living in France demonstrated in Paris on Sunday, demanding more security after a rise in attacks on the community, including the murder of a 49-year-old father of two last month.

Waving French flags and wearing T-shirts demanding "Security for all", the crowd packed Paris's Place de la République, shouting "Security! Security! Security!".

Zhang Chaolin, who worked in the textile trade, was murdered by three men trying to steal his companion's bag in Aubervilliers, just north of Paris in August.

His death sparked a protest in the town and led its Communist mayor Meriem Derkaoui and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve to meet community leaders and promise to beef up the police presence and increase CCTV surveillance.

Anti-Asian racism

Reports to police of muggings against the Chinese community in Aubervilliers have tripled in the last year, from 35 to 105.

Sunday's protests called for action on a national level and for official recognition of "anti-Asian racism".

Organisers accuse the authorities of "closing their eyes to this growing criminality" and claim that "Asians have become the principal target of attackers".

France's ruling Socialist Party issued an official statement backing the demonstration and Paris deputy mayor Bruno Jullard attended, as did Valérie Pécresse, the president of the Ile de France region, who is a member of the right-wing opposition Republicans.

Demonstrations of several thousand took place in the Paris district of Belleville in 2010 and 2011 after a rise in attacks there, including an attack on a wedding party.

Indians are the most affluent minority group in England, even more than the Chinks so the areas populated by them are the most affluent areas over there. Figures the stinky dog eaters would probably feel out of place in such an environment.

Chinese As tourists are pests who bring along the chinese characteristics with them

Shanghaiist's top 10 most embarrassing Chinese tourists of 2015

More Chinese tourists than ever traveled overseas this year. Unfortunately, some of them weren't exactly on their best behavior. Check out the ten travelers that did the most to hurt China's image abroad.

10) Chinese tourist kicks back, puts her bare feet up on international flight, disgusting fellow passengers

A Chinese passenger was spotted giving approximately zero fucks during an Air Asia flight from Bangkok to Xi'an, kicking her bare feet up and resting her toesies on a neighboring passenger's armrest.

A flight attendant was overheard apologizing to disgusted passengers, explaining that there was nothing she could do because, "They are all Chinese."

9) Chinese passengers break out into national anthem to protest delayed flight at Thai airport

A large group of Chinese tourists stirred up quite a scene at an airport in Bangkok in September when they decided to protest a delayed flight by bursting into a noisy rendition of China's national anthem.

For their patriotic actions, these tourists later found themselves on China's infamous travel blacklist.

8) Two arrested in Kunming for opening plane's emergency exits before takeoff

Beginning late last year, a strange thing started to happen, Chinese tourists began trying to open emergency doors on airplanes. Going against all common sense, the trend continued into 2015 when two travelers in Kunming decided to open three of the plane's emergency exits because it was getting a bit stuffy during their delay.

7) Three Chinese tourists thrown off flight at Cambodian airport following scuffle over legroom

In October, three Chinese passengers were kicked off a flight in Cambodia bound for Chengdu after a very heated argument broke out on board before take-off.

The ruckus arose after a man reportedly in his 60s was angered by the inconsiderate woman in front of him tipping her seat back too far. For their actions, these travelers also ended up on the state blacklist.

6) Chinese tourist unwittingly swipes life jacket as 'souvenir' from Cathay Pacific flight, fined HK$2,000

We all make mistakes, this month a Chinese woman mistook a life jacket for a souvenir. The woman simply believed that all Cathay Pacific passengers got a free safety device with their flight. For her confusion, she was found guilty by a Hong Kong court and fined HK$2,000.

5) Chinese mum offers to sleep with US customs official if he just turns a blind eye to $160,000 in undeclared luxury goods

Also earlier this month, a Chinese woman was accused of offering sex as a bribe to a U.S. customs official at JFK airport, after she was caught red handed with a considerable amount of undeclared luxury goods.

4) After being denied seat upgrade, Chinese man throws tantrum before takeoff on board Shanghai-New York flight

Seriously, December was a bad month for Chinese travelers. It also featured a video shot by a passenger aboard a United Airlines flight from Shanghai bound for New York that starred a Chinese man throwing an epic tantrum and eventually being literally dragged, kicking and screaming, from the airplane by police.

It turns out that the guy was even a professor at an American university.

Wont the world LOVE THEM CHINESE for these !!!!

3) Baby on board! Taiwanese woman gives birth on China Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles

When the Taiwanese woman's water broke mid-flight and she started going into labor, she was advised by flight attendants to lie down and prepare for delivery. The woman, however, insisted she would deliver later, and kept asking, "Are we in US air space yet?"

It turns out they were close enough and the flight was diverted to Alaska, and the woman just might have to pick up the tab for that costly diversion.

2) Parents let child defecate in cabin of Guangzhou-bound plane because toilets were 'too small'

Fellow passengers onboard a Shenzhen Airlines flight from Nanjing to Guangzhou got quite the unpleasant surprise when they wandered into to the back of the cabin and found two Chinese parents happily propping up their kid to take a poop right in the aisle.

This happened despite both bathrooms on the plane being vacant at the time. When asked why she didn't get the child to use one of those instead, the mother answered, "Your bathrooms are too small, the three of us can't get in. It's so spacious out here!"

1) Chinese tourist spotted taking a dump outside Burberry store in the UK

Outside a Burberry shop on the outskirts of Oxford, a kid from China being cradled by his grandmother caused quite a stir after being photographed defecating on the street.

After one shopper snapped the photo and posted it on Twitter, Brits reacted with a mix of disgust and confusion -- public toilets are only a few meters away and free of charge. Burberry is number 76 on the following map:

I did..I did..read the whole comment section and many of them comments are reality.

  • I think the singing the national anthem is the best/worst one. It is just such a failure of logic

I'd have to agree with you. It's fascinating. My guess is it's due to the education system, where teaching unfettered patriotism is high on the list. Lack of critical thinking and constant "harmony" probably don't encourage very good problem-solving skills. It's just my guess though.

This is it, on the head. They are basically taught, from a young age, that their country is the top dog, that every other country is lacking when compared to their number-1ness, and that they should be able to walk all over other countries/people because they are Chinese.

The results are predictably fail worthy

  • Shatttap! In China, being nice means you are weak and a loser. Being nice mean you lose the money. Being nice? Haw! When Chinese nice, British sell opium, Japanese attack and America play tricks. China needs to be rich, so if you are a Chinese and you are nice, you endanger China's sovereignty! So shut up

In China, being honest is seen as being stupider than someone who gleefully puts their dick into a blender and presses the in switch

It is the same SHIT behavior we see in chinese diplomacy world over of XI and his minions...

Great, now airline magazines start to offer some meaningful tips, instead of usually all-is-well cosmetics. It sounds "racially" sensitive and undoubtedly many warm-hearted pollyannas may jump up attacking these as over-generalizing or racial slurs. But for travellers better safe than sorry.

Gypsy stereotyping alike etc.... well, much has been covered, even in Les Misérables. Often enough some well-meaning people rush to defend the "minority" but seldom bother to question why and hold those communities accountable for their own doings and bad name.

I'm happy to come across such advice as ALERT- XXX immigrations officials may ask for bribes, and SUGGESTION - reject them upright.

U have to be there to tell hard truth apart from "political correctness" + "artificial courtesy" .
