Yes, India Wants A LOT More Apaches

It has been known for a while that the Indian military will shortly be on board for a far bigger number of attack helicopters than it has ever operated before, there are finally numbers on the table. Livefist can now confirm that India has an express requirement of 39 additional AH-64 Apaches, over and above the 22 originally contracted in September last year. The requirement has been officially defined by the Indian MoD and communicated to Boeing. Of the 39, the first 11 will be options locked to the original contract, with the same price and configuration. The additional 28 will be a freshly negotiated government-to-government contract that could include configuration changes. These new figures also provide the first fleet numbers that the Apache will sport in Indian service: 33 with the Indian Air Force (22 contracted + 11 options at 2009 price) and 28 with the Indian Army. Sources say the additional contract for 28 aircraft could be signed before deliveries of the the original 22 begin in 2019.

The stated numbers are interesting and effectively mean the Indian military is looking at operating roughly four attack helicopter squadrons split between the IAF and Army (the IAF technically operates two squadrons of the Mi-25/35 now, though availability means numbers closer to a single squadron at any given time, or less). While the two services haven’t fully cleared up differences in command and control — the Army still insists on full control of battlefield air assets to the exasperation of the IAF — there hasn’t been any real doctrinal “settlement” on how things will move operationally forward. Livefist learns that an existing document specifically detailing the use of attack helicopters between the IAF and Army will be refreshed and updated before deliveries to the IAF begin in 2019.

In September last year, India signed up after protracted negotiations for 22 AH-64E Apaches, half of which will be Longbows. The Boeing-Tata manufacturing joint venture that’s coming up in Hyderabad will deliver the first Indian-built Apache fuselage in 2018, and will service standing orders for at least 200 new airframes for Boeing’s customers around the world. When ready, it will be the world’s sole global supplier of Apache fuselages.

Last year in the month of September, the Govt. of India approved the purchase of the battle proven AH-64 Apache Gunship Helicopters for the Indian Air Force for approximately $2.5bn. The total amount included the delivery of 22 Apache Helicopters along with Weapons, radars and warfare equipment that will arm the Apache Gunship to the teeth.

The contract however had an open option for India to purchase additional helicopters if required. Internal sources suggest that the Govt.may invoke this option and go for an additional purchase of 39 more Apache Gunships from the U.S.

The first 22 Gunships are meant to replace the aging Mi-35 Attack Helicopters that were bought from Russia for the Indian Air Force. The additional 39 Apache Gunships that the Govt. proposes to buy will be merged with India's four Mountain Strike Corps. This will give the required offensive firepower to tear into enemy territory, may it be China or Pakistan.

The 39 proposed Gunships will be within the control of the Indian Army and not the Air Force.

The first lot of 22 Apache Helicopters will be delivered to the Indian Air Force within the next three years. The time frame for the additional 39 proposed Apache Gunships is however not confirmed as the deal is not yet signed.

They already bought 22. They are being constructed in US. 11 more will be included in the same deal and delivery would start from 2019.

SIr, we have bought 22 already, we means, GOI has bought for Indian Army and IAF. 11 more are being added to 22 already ordered plus 39 fresh orders will be placed.
The first batch of 22 apaches are being already built in america, DM has already been to that facility to look at the work in progress. Deliveries are going to start from 2019.

I am of the opinion that Attack choppers are mostly an operational asset and must be under the army
because the main use for attack chopper is for army support. So I think in future. either air force might pass them to army, else there will be friction
