Agni-VI missile in the works, India to be in world's elite nuclear club

India today said it is developing a long-range nuclear-capable Agni-VI ballistic missile that would carry multiple warheads allowing one weapon system to take out several targets at a time.

"Agni-V is a major strategic defence weapon. Now we want to make Agni-VI which would be a force multiplier," DRDO chief V K Saraswat said here.

Refusing to divulge the range of the new under-development missile, he said the force multiplier capability of the missile would be because of its Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) capability.

The Agni-5 ballistic missile, which was test-fired in April last year, has a range of upto 5,500 kms and it is believed that the Agni-6 would have a range longer than its predecessor.

"It will have force multiplier capability by the MIRV approach which would enable us to deliver many payloads at the same time using only one missile. Work is on in this area and designs have been completed. We are now in the hardware realisation phase," he said.

DRDO officials said once the Agni-6 is developed, it would propel India into the elite club of nations with such a capability including the US and Russia.

The DRDO chief said his organisation was also working towards developing a cruise missile defence programme which would enable the armed forces to defend against low-flying cruise missiles and enemy aircraft.

I hope there is substantial increase of range from Agni V. At the very least, it it should have a range of 7000 km.

GoI capped it at 5000 and forbade DRDO to go further. I guess Agni-VI would be a leaner meaner MIRV ICBM with same 5000 range.

There is no such cap. In an earlier article, it was stated that Agni-VI would have a 500km range increase.
(I'll try to find that article.)

EDIT: Oh, there are actually plenty of other sources that claim that the new missile will have a range of 6000 km- just search Google. Even the first post in this thread says it will have a 500 km increased range:
    http://defenceforumindia.com/forum/...-intercontinental-ballistic-missile-icbm.html

I personally feel its a little silly to have a new missile and only add 500 km (MIRV or no-MIRV), but hey, this is DRDO we're talking about here...

    1) Agni V is NOT a 5500 kms range missile but quite a bit more at at least 8000kms

    2) Agni VI will be 10,000kms plus range.

Well original plan was to have A5 with MIRV and cold launch from canister. Now it appears that after launching A5 with just under 5500 km range, they have change of plan and now A6 with MIRV with slightly higher range. Some report also says that present DRDO Chief V K Saraswat who is about to be retire didnt get extension because of this A6 among other reasons (failed to deliver some of other projects in time).

It appears that something is cooking lets see what GOI do on this.

    @Yusuf
But none of the official sources state that.

Agni-V has a demonstrated range of 5000 km. Whether it was capped or not, I won't get into that debate. Now, if the Agni-VI is tested with a demonstrated range of 6000 km, it will be a 1000 km range increase over it's predecessor.

A5 and A6 are big enough then old series A3 plus new motors so increase in range is more then GOI is saying publicly.

Some sources claim Agni-V as a 5500 km range missile.

The key term in my post is "demonstrated range."

The official claim is 5500 km (even the article in the OP states just that), so if this new missile has a 6000 km range, then the range increase would be 500 km and not 1000 km. That was the point I was alluding to.

That 5500 km range is unofficial, and hypothetical, in my view. Any article or editorial is a responsibility of the person writing it, and hypotheses might be official for any individual. Agni-V was tested only once, and it covered a distance of 5000 km. That is the demonstrated range of Agni-V. Rest is theoretical range.

I am waiting for this new Agni-VI tested for the claimed 6000 km, or hopefully more.

I dread the word Elite Club. If we go by DRDO claims in the last 2 decades we should have been more powerful than even te US.

It's not about official statements but more about analyzing the test of of A5 and also other "reasoning".

Officials don't say things because they will like to maintain ambiguity.

    AFAIK China's MIRV is undemonstrated.

    You can say that :D

We (well some of us at least) in DFI tried to put together the pieces and felt the range was 8000 the day it was tested. The launch point, the impact point, the latitude etc.

The Chinese using their assets in Myanmar were able to monitor the test and said the missile has a range of 8000 kms. They said this a few days after the tests.
