Agni-IV, India’s surface-to-surface missile with a range of about 4,000 km, will be test-fired from the Wheeler Island, off Dhamra village on the Odisha coast, on January 20. It is a strategic missile which can carry a nuclear warhead weighing about one tonne.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which has developed the Agni-IV, will do the test-firing on Monday from its Integrated Test Range on the Wheeler Island. The missile has already been flight-tested three times. While the maiden launch was a failure, the next two were successful. The two-stage missile weighs 17 tonnes and is 20 metres long.

    “Fantastic nuclear deterrence”

DRDO officials had earlier said Agni-IV offered a “fantastic nuclear deterrence” because with its range of 4,000 km, “it can cover the entire area on the other side of the border.” While the Army has already deployed Agni-I, II and III missiles, all of which are strategic missiles carrying nuclear warheads, Agni-IV and Agni-V have not been inducted into the Army yet.

The DRDO has achieved two consecutive successes including its debut flight with Agni-V, which can carry a nuclear warhead weighing one tonne over a distance of 5,000 km. The DRDO will fire Agni-V from a canister in two or three months .

Last couple of months kept seeing the Prithvi constantly in the news so many times don't know whether it was last weeks test or this weeks. Don't know who they are trying to fool this time around...must be the chinese ;) :D

The current Prithvi tests are by the Army.. .may be random testing of production batches. They have nothing to do with developmental programs. Agni IV and V are being development flight tested, I believe.

Ya know this is for the stratergic command user trails. But it is still carried out from chandpuri test range only I think along with the other missiles. Does India have two test ranges for development flights and operational testing?? Don't think so...

4000km (official) but some sources says based on their size and diameter they have more range(they say so because not to attract Internationale attention)

Agni—IV missile successfully test fired - The Hindu

"The test firing was a total success. The missile travelled its full range," M V K V Prasad, the director of Integrated Test Range, said.

India today successfully test-fired its nuclear—capable strategic missile Agni—IV, with a strike range of about 4000 km, from a test range off the Odisha coast.

“The test firing was a total success. The missile travelled its full range,” M V K V Prasad, the director of Integrated Test Range, told PTI.

It was test launched from the launch complex—4 of the ITR at Wheeler Island, at about 10:52 AM, defence sources said.

A high performance on—board computer with distributed avionics architecture, a high speed reliable communication bus and a fully digital control system were used to control and guide the missile to the target, the sources said.

“It is equipped with modern and compact avionics to provide high level of reliability,” a DRDO official said.

“The state—of—the—art Ring Laser Gyros based high accuracy INS (INS) and Micro Navigation System (MINGS) complementing each other in redundant mode have been incorporated into the missile system in guidance mode,” the sources said.

The sophisticated missile is lighter in weight and has two stages of solid propulsion. The payload, with a re—entry heat shield can withstand temperature of more than 3000 degree Celsius, a defence scientist said.

The missile is undergoing developmental trials by the DRDO.This is the third development trial of Agni—IV missile by the DRDO.

Radars and electro—optical systems along the coast of Odisha have been positioned for tracking and monitoring all the parameters of the missile.

Two Indian naval ships were anchored near the target area to witness the final event.

The last trial of the missile was carried out successfully on September 19, 2012 from the same base.

If you guys have paid attention laun h was combined drdo and SFC. SFC officers are standing in line and army personals at the launcher.

so it appears that missile is between development and induction phase.
