India plans to test-fire 3,000 km range 'Agni-2 Prime' by next month - The Economic Times

NEW DELHI: India is planning to test fire by next month 'Agni-2 Prime', an advanced nuclear-capable ballistic missile with a strike range of around 3,000 km.

"We are planning to test fire an advanced nuclear capable Agni-2 Prime missile by next month," Defence Ministry officials said here.

The new missile will be an advancement over the existing Agni-2, which has a strike range of 2,000 km.

The 'Agni-2 Prime' has been developed by making some changes in the Agni 2 missile and will have the same size of boosters which are there in the existing missile but will have an extended range of 1,000 km, they said.

Powered by solid fuel propellants, the 'Prime' will also have a better navigational system and greater accuracy in comparison to the Agni-2 missile.

Newer technologies have also been incorporated in the missile to make it lighter and the weapon system has also been provided with greater thrust.

India has developed a number of variants of the Agni missile series under the Integrated Missile Development Programme ( IMDP) with different striking ranges since the 80s.

It is also planning to carry out the first test firing of the Agni-5 ballistic missile by the end of this year, the sources said.

Agni-5 will be able to strike targets in range of 5,000 km and will make India join the league of select nations with such capabilities.

User trial of Agni-II tomorrow

BALASORE: After successful trials of hypersonic missile 'Shourya' and medium range ballistic missile 'Prithvi'-II, defence scientists and the Indian Army are preparing for a user trial of 2,000-km plus range nuke capable missile Agni-II.

Defence sources said the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), a special wing of the Army, will carry out the test on September 30.

Preparation is on at the Wheeler Island off the Orissa coast for the last fortnight for the test launching of India's first indigenously built Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM).

The test of the missile which was scheduled to be held on August 29 last was aborted due to last minute technical snags in the missile system.

The mission was put off after snags were detected a few seconds before the take off.

The system did not get adequate pressure for ignition following the technical glitch. "Though the pyro was fired in time, required pressure could not be built up for ignition which led the scientists to abort the mission," it said.

A defence official said the snags have been fixed and this time they were hopeful of success in the Agni-II user trial. "Everything is on schedule. We are planning to conduct the test on September 30 or October 1. The test schedule is subject to favourable weather," he told this paper.

This was not for the first time that technical snags were detected in the Agni-II system. In 2009 two consecutive attempts for Agni-II trials had ended in failure. On both the occasions the missile had developed technical glitches during the second stage separation.

The two-stage solid propelled Agni-II missile developed by Advanced System Laboratory (ASL) and other DRDO labs has a length of 20 metres, diameter of one metre and weighs around 17 tonnes.

It is designed to carry both conventional and nuclear payload of over a tonne.

The missile is equipped with a state-of-the-art navigation system with modern techniques for taking the missile towards designated target very accurately. The Agni-II version was first test-fired in 1999 from the same location.

This test is considered 'very crucial' as it is supposed to give a technical push to the country's intercontinental missile programme.

India aims to initiate the programme with the maiden test of 5,000-km range nuclear capable missile Agni-V anytime in December.

The test of 29th was put off due to technical glitch. Now this was not a developmental flight but a test by the SFC taking a missile from the stockpile and firing it. If there were technical snags during the test, it means there are issues with the missile. During a war, we are not going to get time to correct technical glitches to launch the next day. Failures and tech glitches of new missiles under development is acceptable but such glitches in inducted missiles that are crucial part of our second strike capability is not acceptable.

Yusuf, this is a developmental launch.

Delivering nukes through aircraft is always efficient than missiles. Even developed countries get technical problems in missiles we are not alone in that.

Surya missile is a media creation, according to them it is a ICBM with 10k range. Even with all these speculations from media noone from DRDO or SFC has ever said anything about the existence of Surya, yesterday too they denied the possibility of developing an ICBM.

There is no Agni 4.

Agni 3 has 3500km range with 2500kg payload and we have started to induct this missile.

Agni 5 will be tested this December which will have an extra stage than A3, canister based, MIRV.

A launch by SFC is not a development flight. Like I said in that post, a failure in development is ok. Not in inducted missiles.

SFC maybe launching this missile(could be bad reporting) but this missile is not from their inventory, this is a brand new missile.
