A look at AGAT, the russian seeker makers!! and their seekers.

The joint-stock company “AGAT Moscow research institute” is founded in 2002 by reorganization of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “AGAT Moscow Research institute” (AGAT MRI). It was affiliated with air-defense concern “Almaz-Antey".

AGAT Moscow Research Institute is a leading enterprise of Russia’s defense industry in the field of creation of radar seekers for the missiles applied in the air defense systems to oppose air attacks.

AGAT Moscow Research Institute has been organized in 1986 according to the Regulation of 27.01.86 of the USSR Council of Ministers and the Order of the USSR Ministry of Radio Industry of 29.08.86, though the Institute’s staff taken as the basis for its formation has been created as early as in 1958. For half a century passed from that time they have developed all radar seekers used in the missiles of army air-defense complexes "KUB", "BUK" and their modifications, as well as of navy complexes "Shtil" and "Gang". The Institute has also developed all radar seekers for the family of missiles constituting the armament of Russia’s fighter aircraft.

Having begun its activity from the development of relatively simple radar seekers with semi-active homing of several tens kg in weight, AGAT is capable now to create most perfect radar seekers with active homing (ARS) and “fire-and-forget” capability, which weight does not exceed 10 kg. These ARS are equipped with powerful onboard computers and small-size microwave transmitters and receivers. Their specifications correspond to the highest modern requirements.

Recently, AGAT has developed ARS radar seeker under the name “Advanced ARS 9B-1103М”. It is a unique active radar seeker. It comprises the new miniature digital signal processor with large memory capacity and increased operation speed. Fiber-optical gyroscopes are used there instead of mechanical ones. Due to this, the time of missile preparation for launch has been considerably reduced. “Advanced ARS” possesses high degree of unification - it can be applied with any type of missiles, air defense and air-to-air, within the caliber of 150 to 400 mm. A missile with this ARS will have higher homing accuracy, larger range coverage and reduced time ready for launch.

At present, AGAT’s specialists carry out development of new generation ARS for surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles, which will possess even higher characteristics at detection, lock-on and tracking of air targets with generation and transfer in a missile control system of signals required at generation of missile control commands ensuring high accuracy homing on air targets including the targets-carriers of various types of jamming.

Missiles equipped with these ARS are capable of engaging wide class of the targets including airplanes, helicopters (including hovering ones), cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, anti-radiation and anti-ship missiles.

Creation of new small-size ARS, providing high-precision missile homing, became possible due to application in AGAT’s products of state-of-the-art technologies, utilization of computerized workstations and implementation of unique measuring and modeling facilities.

During the last years, highly skilled specialists and scientists of AGAT with participation of many talented young engineers have devised miniature microwave transmitters and receivers, high-performance onboard computers and digital signal processors. Considerable progress is attained in the development of the newest antenna devices and, in particular, in creation of flat slotted waveguide monopulse arrays and sharp-pointed radiotransparent radomes possessing high radar characteristics. The work is under way for application of phased arrays and active phased arrays in perspective ARS. A lot of attention is given in AGAT to creation of conversion products and, in particular, medical equipment. Portable electrocardiographical complex ECG-"Agat", bilirubin analyzer АBChK-02 making it possible to monitor bilirubin level without taking patient’s blood, and UROFLOWMETER- “AGAT” intended for early diagnosis of urological diseases have been developed and type-approved.

AGAT Moscow Research Institute is one of few companies of the world, capable of creating ARS for aviation and air-defense missiles at the level of world standards. On a contract basis, AGAT’s specialists and scientists are ready to perform development of ARS and other equipment in minimum time at the highest scientific and technical level.

ppgj! Thanks for the interesting info on seekers. This is the area where our pvt sector can contribute with active funding from DRDO,BDL and HAL,BEL. Basically the seekers with complete RF package are small radars. The bulk of material required is less and miniaturisation will be the aim. small slotted array antenna mounted on gimbal mechanism driven by either brushless DC or Brush DC motors controlled by onboard computers. nice technology to get involved with.sadly not much work is done in India though DRDO requires them for all its radarguided,IR seeking missile developments. will AGAt part with these seeker tech to India? Nowadays newseekers are going the AESA way with out any moving parts...

added later

"On a contract basis, AGAT’s specialists and scientists are ready to perform development of ARS and other equipment in minimum time at the highest scientific and technical level." I hope DRDO babus are already on the job!!!

you are right venkat.

seeker technology is the brain of a missile. the critical tech is what makes it difficult to create and the same reasons hold the countries who have it, from passing it to us.

however drdo has been trying its best. it is worth noting this -

A key component of the missile programme is the homing or seeker technology, and DRDO is laying emphasis on achieving self-sufficiency in this. Notably, many countries have also offered to share sophisticated anti-missile technology with India.

Issue 34. July - August 1999

AGAT PRESENTS RADAR SEEKERS OF THE 21st CENTURY

Iosif Akopyan, Director and General Designer of the Moscow-based Agat Research Institute

Full article is available for subscribers only.

The Moscow-based Agat Research Institute is a leading enterprise of the Russian defense industry in the field of developing radar seekers (RS) for air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles intended to fight air attack weapons.

9B-1103M RS

Its products have been repeatedly demonstrated at international aerospace shows and have always aroused interest of military experts from many countries.

The Agat Institute has been engaged in developing radar seekers since 1958. During this time, it has accumulated extensive experience in the development, testing and series production of several generations of radar seekers.

The Institute has all conditions for full-scale development and testing of radar seekers, as well as for their manufacture in small batches.

The Agat Institute has developed radar seekers for the Kub and Buk field air defense missile systems and their versions such as the Kvadrat, Gang and Ural systems, as well as for the Shtil shipboard air defense system. In addition, it has created all radar seekers for missiles to arm MiG-23, MiG-25, Mig-29, MiG-31, Su-27 fighters and their modifications.

In recent years, the development of radar seekers in the Agat Institute proceeded along two lines. The first line was the further upgrading of previously developed semiactive radar seekers by using the newest components and the digital processing of signals, as well as reducing RS weight and dimensions. The logic of RS functioning was also improved in jamming environments and under various conditions of missile combat employment. In particular, the problem of ensuring engagement of waterborne and some types of ground targets was successfully resolved for the radar seeker of the Buk-M1 air defense missile system.

The second line of the Institute's business was the development of new active radar seekers with characteristics allowing their use in 21st century missiles. One result of this work is the improved 9B-1103M RS which the Agat Institute presents at the MAKS '99 aerospace show.

9B-1388 RS

This radar seeker has a diameter of 200 mm, weighs no more than 10 kg and ensures a detection range of at least 25 km for a target with an effective reflective area (ERA) of 5 m2.

The development of the updated 9B-1103M RS has resolved complicated technological problems that cause difficulties for world-renowned companies. As a result, the Agat Institute has developed new miniature units and devices that serve as the basis for this and other advanced RSs. These include:

- a miniature SHF transmitter and an SHF receiver with an accelerated mode of klystron and TWT heating;

- an RS antenna seeker based on two fiber-optic gyros (instead of mechanical ones);

- a digital signal processor and a high-speed computer (over 50 mln operations per second) with a large memory volume, which allows signal processing in several parallel channels.

9E50M1E RS

The use of these devices significantly improves the RS performance, especially:

- decreases the time of missile launch readiness (to 7 - 8 s from the cold state or to 1 s when the cathode is partially warmed up in the standby mode);

- increases RS smartness, thereby significantly improving missile jamming immunity and accuracy of guidance.

The Agat Institute presents its most promising products at the 4th Moscow Aerospace Show in the town of Zhukovsky, including the following radar seekers:

- updated 9B-1103M;

- 9B-1103M;

- 9B-1348E;

- 9B-1388;

- 9E50M1E.

The Agat Institute continues science-intensive research in the field of defense products, carries out development work relevant for the Russian economy and welcomes cooperation.

@venkat.

this really interests me.

The Astra's indigenously developed onboard radio-frequency seeker will apparently have an active homing range of 15 km, and though a proximity and a radar fuse for the Astra's pre-fragmented warhead already exist, scientists would appear to be working on a laser fuse version as well.
this is from an older article domain-b.com : India crosses the threshold

Added Later :

ok. here is the answer.

Russia has helped India develop the new Radio Frequency Seeker for the interceptor missile,
http://www.zeenews.com/nation/2009-03-09/513782news.html

indian scientists must have adopted that to Astra.

Technical Note #3 Agat Active Radar Seekers for SAM Upgrades

The 9B-1348 family of active radar terminal / inertial/datalink midcourse guided seekers developed for the RVV-AE / R-77 / AA-12 Adder AAM has produced important spinoffs. These are the 9B-1103M series of seekers, offered as new build or retrofit active radar seekers for AAMs or SAMs. The Agat 9B-1103M-200 is intended for the R-27A/AE / AA-10 Alamo, and is directly derived from the R-77 9B-1348E seeker. The latest subtype of this seeker is claimed by Agat to use the Texas Instruments TMS-320 digital signal processing chip, widely used in Western radar equipment.

The 9B-1103M-350 is a variant which is specifically designed as a replacement retrofit seeker for existing new build or legacy semi-active homing SAM seekers, with the 3M9/9M9 (SA-6) and 9M38 (SA-11/17) cited as specific targets for such upgrades.

Active radar homing seekers offer numerous tactical advantages absent in 'conventional' semi-active seekers, where the engagement radar is committed to illuminating the target until missile impact. With an 'AMRAAM-like' seeker the missile can be launched in several modes:

* Active post launch, where the SAM goes active once off the launch rail and homes to impact. This mode is limited to short ranges.
* Inertial midcourse with active terminal homing, where the SAM flies out to a preprogrammed box and autonomously acquires the target.
* Inertial midcourse with datalink updates and active terminal homing, where the SAM flies out under datalink control and autonomously acquires the target.

The latter two modes are especially of interest since the engagement radar may be operating in a track while scan mode and the victim may not know it is under attack unless it can detect the missile uplink transmissions, in the latter of the two modes. The latter two modes are also compatible with third party tracking where the engagement radar is not emitting search or track signals, launching and guiding the missiles against an aimpoint provided by another sensor such as an Emitter Locating System or other radar.

Other than flexibility in guidance modes and reduced warning time, active radar seekers also present opportunities to engage multiple and separated targets concurrently within a sector covered by the engagement radar.

Since Agat first displayed the 9M1103M-350, the company has developed an enhanced 240 mm diameter seeker for the R-37 / AA-13 Arrow AAM, which is capable of acquiring a 5 m2 target at 70 km range.

The range of derivative seekers produced by Agat present upgrade opportunities for a number of SAM types other than the SA-6/11/17 initially targeted by the company's marketing effort. There are respectable inventories of the legacy SA-3, SA-5, SA-8 and SA-10 in many nations, which if retrofitted with modern active radar seekers become significantly more lethal and survivable.

Agat AAM seekers. Left to right: 9B-1101K dual plane monopulse semi-active homing seeker used in R-27R1/ER1, 9B-1348E active radar homing seeker used in R-77 variants, and 9B-1103M active radar homing seeker for R-27EA (Agat).
