Afghanistan's megaflag symbolises 'Hind-Afghan Dosti'

Kabul: Afghanistan has boldly raised its black, red and green megaflag - big enough to drape over a dinosaur - in the heart of the capital here with India's help, a monument that symbolises 'Hind-Afghan Dosti'.

The 97 by 65 feet flag taller than the Statue of Liberty replica in Las Vegas - was personally presented by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to Afghan President Hamid Karzai last week during her maiden visit to the country.

The flag was hoisted over Kabul's historic Wazir Akbar Khan hill, next to the empty Communist-era swimming pool once used by the Taliban regime for executions. The monument is being called the Menara Bayraq, or Flag Minaret.

Speaking at the inaugural flag hoisting ceremony, Swaraj said India saw the monument as "a powerful symbol of a unified and independent Afghanistan."

She praised the countless Afghan citizens, Mujahideen and soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice to build this country.

The minister also pledged USD 1 million to the Afghan government for development of Wazir Akbar Khan Hill area.

"Hind Afghan Dosti Zindabad," Swaraj said, asserting that India will always be Afghanistan's first strategic partner.

The Rs 2 crore flag was gifted by Flag Foundation, a charitable organisation promoted by industrialist Naveen Jindal.

The 15-tonne flagpole is high enough to make the banner visible from nearly all quarters of Kabul. The pole was flown in from India in segments, then erected to be earthquake-proof by Indian engineers, the New York Times said.

Yes indeed.

I hope there will be transparency and both nations will benefit from these deals.
