WASHINGTON: Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich said Wednesday that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal was at risk of being seized by “extremists” who had probably infiltrated Islamabad’s military.

“My guess is that they have well over 100 nuclear weapons and that the Pakistani military is so penetrated by extremist elements you have no idea if one morning, they are going to lose three or four of them. I mean just have them stolen,” Gingrich told CNN’s Situation Room program.

Gingrich, a veteran Republican who has surged in recent weeks to the top of the pack of contenders vying to unseat Democratic President Barack Obama, also derided Pakistan’s claims that officials did not know Osama bin Laden had been hiding there for years before elite US forces found and killed him in May.

“The Pakistani military was capable of protecting bin Laden for six years,” in Abbottabad, a major military city north of Islamabad, Gingrich said.

“Now do I think Osama bin Laden was sitting a mile from the national military university and nobody noticed him in their intelligence service? It’s inconceivable,” the presidential hopeful said.

US opinion polls on Tuesday showed Gingrich, a former speaker in the House of Representatives, had extended his lead over rivals, both in the leadoff Iowa caucus nominating contest and nationwide.

A Washington Post/ABC News poll of 858 likely Iowa caucus goers put Gingrich atop the field at 33 per cent, trailed by former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney on 18 per cent, who is level with libertarian conservative Ron Paul.

PPP raps Qureshi for nukes safety remarks

LAHORE: PPP (central Punjab) President Imtiaz Safdar Warraich has criticised former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi for alleging in his Ghotki rally on Sunday that the nuclear weapons were not safe under the present PPP regime.

“How can the atomic assets be unsafe in the presence of the PPP leadership since Mr Qureshi knows it well that party’s founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and her daughter Benazir Bhutto have sacrificed their lives for their safety.

He (Qureshi) just wants to defame the PPP government by leveling baseless allegations, but the party workers will foil all his efforts,” Mr Warraich said while speaking at a press conference here on Monday.

Flanked by secretary-general Samiullah Khan and other party leaders, he said Mr Qureshi being the foreign minister had already declared the atomic assets safe under the PPP government.

He said one thing was common in Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Imran Khan that both had supported the so-called referendums of Gen Ziaul Haq and Gen Pervez Musharraf.

He termed the former foreign minister an opportunist who always did the politics for his personal and vested interests. “Why Mr Qureshi didn’t raise any objection on President Zardari at the time when he was lobbying for becoming the Punjab chief
minister or the foreign minister of Pakistan,” Mr Warraich said.

He warned Mr Qureshi to avoid giving derogatory remarks against the party leadership or else angry PPP workers knew well how to tackle a turncoat.

Chandio: Federal Minister for Law and Justice Maula Bakhsh Chandio has criticised former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and described him as a traitor.

“Qureshi is playing the role of a traitor, not a rebel and he is doing this just for his vested political interests,” the
minister told journalists at the Lahore airport on Monday.

About Qureshi’s public meeting in Ghotki, Chandio said it couldn’t dent Pakistan’s biggest political party and its leadership. He said Nawaz Sharif shouldn’t have moved the Supreme Court on the memogate issue because the government had already accepted his demands in this regard. “The PML-N leadership wants early polls and it is using all tactics to achieve this goal, but this will not happen.”He said as Sharif fulfilled his promise made with Pervez Musharraf and lived in exile for 10 years, the PPP government would fulfill its promise made with the people and complete its five-year term.

Either both of these guys are playing politics or it is a mix of politics and apprehension based on certain facts.

Pure BS. The nukes are Pakistans lifeline. You can trust that they care about their own interests very much.
Be sure that they are guarded.

The same argument can be used against you. How you know they are not safe?
I say they are safe because they will be stupid not to guard their lifelines. You can trust their self preservation. That was my point.

For USA or China, any one against USA or China is a terrorist and Nucs should not fall in their hands !

For India it does not really matter if the nucs are under control of in Chinese hating terrorist or USA hating terrorists. Waht matters to India is that there are Chinese designed missile and Nucs with one or the other shades of terrorists inside Pakistan.

I think Chinese and Americans have committed a blunder of epoch by Arming Pakistani terrorists with Nuclear missiles and bombs. In India Mythology there is a story of Bhasmasur who was given a boon that those will perish on whom Bhashmasur put his hands on. China and USA being in love with that terrorist Bhasmasur and Bhasmasur knowing fully well who all love him, will put his hands on China and USA.

Hence, those who have responded from inside the room will open the door, China being the first.

Now, why don't the Muslim clerics talk about this and act against Zardari, instead of falling on the Muslim women?

Newt will talk about anything, and anything he says is linked to politics now.
A prudent person has facts and doesn't guess on an issue of this magnitude.

You dont understand because you dont think.

Let me explain it so even a 12 years old can understand.

Pakistan has nukes and US knows it. With me so far?
Good, now, does US knows where the nukes are?
    You have here two options.
    1. US does not know
    2. Us does know

Now if you pick option 1, then you have to ask yourself this:
If CIA do not know the whereabouts of Pakistans nukes, then how can some camelf*** with beard know the locations?

The Osama incident should tell you something about the capacity of US intel if you were ever in doubt.

Now if you pick option 2, then you need to ask this:
If US knows the whereabouts of the nukes, why have they not taken it out?
The answer is obvious. They trust that the Pakistan military establishment will do whatever it takes to safeguard the nukes. The last thing US wants is nukes falling into hands of terrorists. If there is a slight chance it will fall into their hands, the US will react will a vengeance. The Pakistanis knows that as well.
You can doubt about everything else, but you can bet your asse that they are not suicidal. In other words, you dont need to trust my words, or Pakistan, but you can trust the US. The fact that they have not taken those nukes out is answer enough. The moment Pakistan gives nukes to fundamentalists, imagine the US response. Self preservation is the key word here.

So stop with those sensational BS with no value what so ever. Welcome to the real world.

    China knows.

She has put it there in the first place.

Chinese never do things half way.

Brig Yusuf of the ISI has written so in his book!

The thread title should be non uniformed extremists are trying to take over nukes from uniformed extremists. I wish it happen soon. Then only nukes will be pointed towards supporters of uniformed extremists.
