Look at that comparison chart. And look at what iaf wants from LCA mk2.
Let me clearly state. IAF now wants LCA mk2 to be almost as capable as mirage in terms of payload , range etc .

Now I get this clearly. When LCA was designed in 1983 it was only to replace mig21. A small humble fighter. To run on minimum expense. ( We were very poor back in 83 when LCA was on design table).

But suddenly after 2010 IAF wants it's capacity to equal that of a mirage which was the most potent of iaf fighters before su30 .

Two things come to mind. Our financials are good now we can spend more on fuel so we want LCA to be more capable but that's fine. But then LCA mk1 is already more capable than all the MIGs that we have so why are there not equal no. Of confirmed orders. Why is iaf comfortable with mig 21 , 27 and not LCA mk1. LCA mk1A is clearly capable to replace all the MIGs 21, 27 .

2nd we should've designed LCA to be a mirage class fighter from the very beginning it would have saved all that drama we are facing now. 30 years later we are demanding LCA to have same capabilities (not in technology but in crude things weight , payload , range , internal fuel). These are things LCA has been criticised for . People forget about it's composite , fly by wire, advanced helmet / glass cockpit. But it's criticised because it can't carry as much payload as f16 or mirage which are simply much bigger and heavier than what we designed LCA for!!!!

Iaf clearly screwed up with it's priorities. Lca mk2 is an advantage and not an excuse to delay mig replacement or importing f16. LCA mk1 already satisfy whatever migs can do.
Question is will New Defence Minister NS get this information/arguments or will she be fooled by IAF import lobby.

In case NS is able to pull IAF for its frequent shifting demands, she will be able to do justice to her role. Else if she listen to import lobby of IAF, India loses on all fronts. Loss of foreign exchange, dependence on foreign maal, etc

iaf wants to operate various fighters with different capabilities, that's the reason to go for new se fighter jets.

but we should induct more and more tejas ...which will save our money

in the same time for some critical technologies we have to depend on foreign nations

so govt is going for se fighter

NEW DELHI ― The ruling National Democratic Alliance government’s Make in India policy could suffer a major blow as the Indian Air Force mulls the purchase of 105 Mark 2 versions of futuristic, homemade light-combat aircraft for $15 billion.

Service officials and analysts say the program faces uncertainty due to a lack of clarity and other immediate priorities.

As of now, the Air Force wants to place an order with state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, or HAL, for only 83 Mark 1 versions of the LCA for a cost of about $7.81 billion to meet the immediate fighters requirement.

“LCA Mark 2 is a far-fetched vision. The service wants improvement on existing LCA to address all issues of looms, improvement in performance, interchange ability, improved U.S.-made GE 414 [engine], improved avionics and missiles to be fitted on it,” a senior Indian Air Force official said.

Daljit Singh, a defense analyst and retired Air Force air marshal, said that the Mark 2 effort ”was proposed by the IAF to ensure that the LCA complies with majority of the air staff requirements. However, that would involve major design change of fuselage to accommodate more powerful engine.”

A senior executive of HAL said the production line of the LCA Mark 1A could be used for the Mark 2 version, but the executive refused to comment if there were plans to execute an LCA Mark 2 program.

The Air Force had initially sought 105 of the Mark 2 versions, which would come with fifth-generation fighter elements; improved propulsion system; a mounted, homemade Uttam active electronically scanned array radar; and the capability to carry 5,000 kilograms of armament.

A Ministry of Defense official said the LCA Mark 2 cannot be abandoned because it’s an important Indian-made project. The official added that efforts will be made to set the program on track for the Air Force.
On the future of the LCA Mark 2, Singh noted: “The project does not appear to have formal sanction, even though a lot of deliberations appear to have taken place.

The article says: LCA MK 2 is in dole drums. Sources specified are unnamed officials, self proclaimed analysts and says there has been no formal sanction of money from goverment so far, Standing committee on Defence: Report 30 says that 2052.6 Cr have been sanctioned

Article can't exactly quantify the claim of IAF really dumping the LCA Mk-2, but does says of some hiccups?

What exactly is this article trying to say then?.
Defencenews and Vivek Raghuvanshi at it again. Classic case of bending facts. IAF always wanted a Mk2 version with more powerful GE-F414 engine rather then F404 which was a make shift arrangement instead of Kaveri. Now since the goodies IAF asked for in Mk2 was time consuming, so HAL and ADA provided an intermediate in form of Mk1A with F-414 and some major improvements in the form of avionics, RADAR, mass and TOW.

Even Mk2 was conceptualized around F-414 and had only a fractionally longer fuselage to accommodate sensors rather then engine. Here also they have bend the facts by quoting Mr Daljit Singh. Any of the defence analyst would know that apart from weight, dimensions of F-404 and F-414 are exactly the same.

IAF has already placed order for 20 LCA in IOC configuration, 20 LCA in FOC configuration and another 83 Mk1A in FOC config. So right now unless and untill this quantity is delivered, there is no question of Mk2 order. It is a simple attempt to show the dearth of SEF in IAF inventory and to push the F-16 or Gripen sale for the same. Remember the news of India going for American BMD to protect New Delhi? Its the same site and same author at play here.

Does engine weight increase result in requirement for more wing area to generate lift? If yes then that may be the reason for fuselage changes even if size of 404 and 414 is same.

May be...It seems Vivek Raghuvanshi is a famous anti-lca writer ?

But there are recent news that says US based lobbies had written anonymous letter to MoD telling they are not going to share any Major ToT, they are not responsible of any malfunctions and someother.

Factually this again brings the ball in LCA's court, and in terms of foreign fighter in favour of more rafale. This further signifies more work on LCA by france as offsets. US is gonna get pissed off if SE fighter order is reduced/ scrapped keeping in mind even if Gripen is selected, it has a lot of US parts, US is not going to make things easy for Gripen either.

All in all keeping in mind Dwindling squadrons, hiccups in foreign deals, all foreign fighters are on paper now except LCA which has already hit production lines and CCS cleared another one. Whatever these MSM guys says the delays in foreign fighter deals are taking the deal in LCA's court. Hence the badmouthing!

In order to accommodate a slightly larger 414 engine minor modification is needed in the Tejas MK 1 airframe. That means that mk2 airframe will be having a length of 14.2 m which is 1m more than that of mk1 for incorporating a stretched nose section, aft of the cockpit for housing complement of mission avionics LRUs, Height of 4.6 m as opposed to 4.4 m of mk1 to accommodate an enlarged vertical tail section and wingspan 8.2m which is same as mk1 that however with an increased wing area. Hope this answers some of your queries.

They are saying that because they want us to believe in it. After all a weapon is only as good as the fighter wielding it. May be these guys have it. I would believe in it. You would too if you were to think from the perspective of defending India. Something these guys expect to do and are expected to.

Folland Gnat and Mig-21Bison were also not the best of their times but in Indian hands and for the then Indian problems, these technical solutions proved themselves the best.

LCA will do perfectly about 80% of all fighter missions that IAF will ever do in next 30 years. And LCA can seed 100% of the industry that will be able to provide platforms for 100% of the missions that IAF will ever do, Ever.

You see, USAF has only to fight against Libyas and Syrias and try to appear engaged and holy when the Russians and Chinese come to the scene. That is what their equipment is meant to do. Our problems are different. If you can give me a single engined fighter that can do any of the above that the LCA will, then please make your offer. I promise I will not pretend to be engaged elsewhere.
