Activism: Why Swamy gets it right and Team Anna wrong | Firstpost

He’s not one of the most likable people around. He neither has a popular base as a politician, nor a dedicated following in the intellectual class. He is known to be as much a danger to enemies as to friends. He is ambitious but too fickle; he loves to fight the good fight — and make it bitter and personal — but there’s no apparent sense of purpose in the exercise. But what makes Dr Subramanian Swamy so effective as a crusader?

‘Knowledge’, should be the one-word answer. Extended a bit, it is his ability to work out the beguiling nuances in the functioning of institutions correctly and framing the problem areas as legal questions. If he has been successful in forcing the PMO or Home Minister P Chidambaram into the legal wringer — the consequence might be politically disastrous for the latter — the credit goes to his dispassionate intellect. With this handy, he does not need the media to back him or frenzied men on the street cheering him on.

He works within the system and finds solutions to its problems within the system.

he Supreme Court order on automatic sanction for persecution of officials in cases of graft is a huge a step forward in fighting corruption in bureaucracy. It yanks off the shield protecting corrupt officials. The next step should be attachment of property of such officials. Unfortunately, the importance of the order was reduced to whether it was a slap on the PM’s face. There has been a similar apex court order earlier but the credit of reviving it must go to Swamy.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court besides cancelling the 122 2G licenses issued in 2008 by then Telecom Minister A Raja, left the issue of whether P Chidambaram should be probed by the CBI in the 2G case to the trial court. The home minister gets a breather but the sword of prosecution keeps hanging on his head. It also leaves the entire government on tenterhooks. Isn’t such court action a huge disincentive for corrupt practices in big deals?

It is certain that by the end of the 2G trial, a strong mechanism will be in place to address corruption in high places, particularly in issuing licences. The political class – graft is not a Congress-specific or BJP-specific problem, it’s a common trait among all parties — will be suitably chastened and forewarned against indulging in corrupt activities. Swamy, though he is not the only one to go after 2G irregularities, must get due credit here too.

What makes his fight stand apart? Well, he is clear on how to go about it. He does not suggest fancy ideas outside the arrangement of institutions – like the Lokpal of Team Anna – but still remains an agent of change. He appears convinced that governments — caught as they are with their own vested interests won’t bring change, courts would. And, it helps that he is thorough in legal matters and can easily catch foul play by opponents. The background noise — the media, popular support — is irrelevant in his fight. They are a distraction from the main cause. If only Team Anna understood it!

Threats and blackmailing tactics don’t bring changes, the power of persuasion does. The Right to Information Act, a game-changing legislation in ensuring transparency in governance, was the result of the dogged effort of Arvind Kejriwal, now a vocal member of Team Anna. The passage of the Act and the lengthy deliberation preceding it was not a high profile media affair. But the effort was purposeful and the result is visible for all. In both cases, the approaches are different but they deliver the results.

Swamy’s small victories are a big lesson in activism. His intentions might be spurious – he is selective about his targets and his offensive does not follow a principled position on issues – but so long as they deliver the right results it should be nobody’s concern.

He's better than anyone ruling we got. If the man is against the c*nt grass party, I am all for him. He's got some serious guts to harrow this anti-national government.

    Go Swamy!! You the man!

Will anna be remembered for a trillion years, in other words infinity? Only then is remembrance worth to even be given a fu(k.

What is valid is that Swamy is the one who used the system to bring the 3g scam to light and he is doing a far better job than anna at the moment. No pun intended to anna.

Both Anna and Swamy are 2 different class of people.

Anna asked for support against Corruption. He got in starting but later on he failed. You can't change the system by asking. Nothing changed after that. I support both and it won't be correct to compare.

Swamy single handedly exposed 2G scam, fought in various courts including SC and finally, SC cancelled all 122 illegal spectrum allocation and saving more than 1.5 lakh crore of public fund. If he didn't fought, no chance of SC giving this very judgement today. All by legal cases and court judgement. it does not matter, whether he is associated with politics or not, but he did what is good for the country. He is one man army with huge contacts & intellectual mind. Today, He has huge fan following.

Pitting the methods of one crusader against another is a naive thing to do. Both kind of activism have their own effect, of course the legal methods, if one can win in courts, will bear fruit soon and be quite effective. On the other hand, if suppose Team Anna manages to get a strong Lokpal bill passed, that would make very difficult the business of corruption as it is today in the country. That would be a total game changer.

All kinds of activism that is beneficial for the people must see support from the people.

Anna and his campaign and Swamy are two different things and both very important for this country. BTW the author is a pro-establishment journalist so his opinion can be taken in that view.

Frankly, I think the reason that Anna fails and Swamy succeeds is simply because Swamy is just more intelligent, influential, dynamic and sensible.

Anna uses more rhetoric and "dialogues" in his campaign, which most Indians can understand and comprehend. On the other hand, Swamy is very intelligent - he was a Harvard professor in economics! That is not something small. And Swamy has immense experience of fighting in the past - against Jayalalitha, Bangarappa, Ram Setu case, etc. etc.

I think this proves once more that intelligent and rational constitutional methods will work well in India. Rabble rousing and rhetorical speeches look good for some time, but don't work in the long run.

Swamy will be much more pain in the arse than Anna can ever hope to be.

This is not to discredit Anna a bit, but just the truth.

After things work out, neither Swamy or Anna would be remembered.

    Human memory is short.

Anna woke up the unexposed seething anger within nation in a populist way and did good service.

Swamy took on the Govt in a scientific and analytical manner and exposed their dirty tricks.

    Both have played their role.

The nation may not remember them, but history will!

    Heard of Mahatma Gandhi?

On Monday he was forgotten by Ahmedabad. The city forgot to blare their siren at dot 11AM, as they have been doing throughout independent India's history!

Bapu forgotten Siren falls silent in city this year

So, that much for human memory!

    Pretty much true.

Swamy is single determined man. Anna is just face of people talking in his name.

He is better than bloody all of us. What have we got on our collars to talk down about Anna or Swamy?
I wouldn't parrot against them when I haven't done even half of what they did. So, Mr. Swamy and Anna team regardless of the results, I'm grateful for your efforts. You did way better than me.
IMO Swamy fights by logic and law as his weapons while Anna strives mostly upon public sentiment on his side. Both have their own importance.
I guess in the former case, it is difficult for an inhouse enemy (our own Govt.) to escape. The latter works better when your enemy isn't proxy and within; when he is clear naked in front - like the British were, as outsiders.

Let us put it this way . There is one more player here

A vigilant and powerful SC which always wants to rap the govt on its knuckles

Swamy started this battle in the courts but the mass momentum against Corruption has come
    from Anna's struggle

Even though we might not have a Lok pal soon the Anna effect will put a check on the entire
system for a few years at least

The fight against corruption is lost when the people loose interest and stop following Corruption cases

Yesterday's SC decision of cancelling the licences though a landmark one will also be forgotten soon

Public apathy is the main reason for corruption

I think the way Anna has united the masses against graft, Swamy could never have done. And the way Swamy has fought with the legal tools, Anna could never have done.

One is a star batsman, the other star bowler and the Indian team needs both of them shining.

    Well said my friend.

Both complement each other and do not contradict each other as the our own Deep State is trying to do.

Both of them are required in this crusade.
