AAP to contest LS polls under Kejriwal's leadership - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: A day after Arvind Kejriwal stepped down as Delhi chief minister, Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday made it clear that it would contest the Lok Sabha polls under his leadership.

"...It is clear that Aam Aadmi Party will contest general elections under Kejriwal's leadership across the country," senior AAP leader Yogendra Yadav told reporters.

Kerjriwal yesterday resigned as Delhi chief minister shortly after his government was defeated on the issue of tabling of the Jan Lokpal Bill in Delhi assembly in the face of a united resistance by outside supporter Congress and BJP.

Congress and Opposition BJP said Kejriwal was never serious about governing and was looking for an excuse to "run away" to cover up his "failure" to deliver on his commitments.

The BJP also made it clear that the party would seek fresh elections in Delhi and was ready for it rather than form an alternative government since it did not have the required numbers in the state assembly.

To have PM ambition is not enough to become PM and for this the party need to win majority of seats in Lok Sabha elections and AAP candidates will stand for elections for the first time in General Elections on 350 seats all over India.

AAP begins 'Jhaadu Chalao Yatra' across 24 states | NDTV.com

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday launched a nationwide anti-corruption drive and will hold a string of rallies under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, who quit as Delhi chief minister, party leaders said.

The AAP went into an overdrive Saturday, a day after Kejriwal, 45, put in his papers following a tumultuous day in the assembly where attempts to introduce Jan Lokpal Bill aimed to curb corruption in high places was "defeated".

Intending to clean up "a corrupt system", the AAP kicked off its 'Jhaadu Chalao Yatra' across 24 states Saturday, a party statement said. The Jhaadu (broom) is the election symbol under which the over an year old party fought the Delhi assembly election, bagging 28 seats. It went on to form the government that lasted 49 days.

The week-long 'yatra' (journey) will be organised at over 2,500 places in 332 constituencies across 24 states.

Intending to connect with the public, the journey is essentially a "clean-up drive against corrupt politicians, criminals and rioters in the Parliament", the statement said.

As part of the campaign, party members and supporters will form groups in their respective areas and organise the drive by flashing brooms and distributing pamphlets.

"The yatra will conclude after the groups converge and clean up a public place like a school or a hospital," said party leader Gopal Rai.

"During the journey, forms will be filled to bring new workers under the party-fold," he added

The party also said that they will start a nation-wide anti-corruption rally, led by Kejriwal, from Haryana's Rohtak district - the home district of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda of the Congress - on February 23. Assembly elections in Haryana are scheduled for later this year.

AAP leader Yogendra Yadav said: "The second rally will be held March 2 in Kanpur."

Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Yadav justified Kejriwal's resignation, saying the AAP has set a precedent as a government that is willing to quit.

"AAP was formed to contest election on several principles, one of the foremost being the Jan Lokpal Bill," he said.

"As we were not allowed (to introduce the bill) and it became clear that in this assembly, it was impossible for AAP to even introduce the bill on Jan Lokpal, the party complimented Arvind Kejriwal for taking a clear decision of resigning," he added.

Rai also announced the start of the nation-wide stir which he called the 'Jhaadu chalao beiman harao yatra' from Saturday.

The party will hold 2,500 anti-corruption rallies in 24 states in next seven days to expose the alliance of Congress and BJP. The rallies will also ask more and more people to join AAP, Rai said.

"The party members will go to different states, cities, district and villages and will try to add large number of people to the party. From today, 25 rallies are being held in different cities and these rallies will go to Maharashtra, Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh etc.," said Rai.

The rallies will conclude at Rohtak.

Party leader Ashutosh meanwhile said the party will discuss possible candidates for the Lok Sabha in the political affairs meeting on Sunday.

Medha Patkar’s candidature may pose problems for NCP - The Hindu

The Aam Aadmi Party decision to field Narmada Bachao Andolan leader and activist Medha Patkar from Mumbai’s Northeast Lok Sabha constituency is likely to increase troubles for the Nationalist Congress Party.

The seat is now held by NCP MP Sanjay Dina Patil. Ms. Patkar, last month, announced her full-fledged support to the Aam Aadmi Party. At the time she said she would extend only outside support.

She has been active in the Northeast constituency through her several agitations for the slum dwellers. The constituency has large number of slums in Mankhurd, Govandi and Deonar. The seat is divided into pockets of Gujarati, Muslim and Dalit population, along with sizeable Marathi voters.

Ms. Patkar told The Hindu that the main agenda of her campaign would remain corruption by the established parties. “I took this decision after consultation with various organisations. The AAP is raising the issues which we always wanted to raise and hence I found this party a good platform,” she said.

Ms. Patkar said that since she had worked in the constituency for many years, she was aware of the issues there.

Medha Phatkar is a professional agitator.

A great one to hunt for publicity.

I am watching the Sibal vs Asotosh stuff very closely.

Both are great ones to expose dirty linen of the other in public.

Chandni Chowk will become the sewer of words, mostly unsubstantiated!

I love the name Phoolka. Interesting name, as interesting as that of a friend of mine, whose surname Batura!

Is adjective affliction Manu Singhvi, Renuka drama queen, and nose flaring Nataranjan in the election fray?

    Or they cowering in fear?

I believe Rahul is contesting in more than one seat and so is his mother.

    Is that correct?

Mr Ray have you noticed in the article , She is working in that constituency for many years and i hope she can bring all the people on one platform and bring real changes in their lifes. What should be important for Medha Patkar is keep her values always with her even when she is elected and work with the same spirit but stop for turning everything into agitation.

She has been active in the Northeast constituency through her several agitations for the slum dwellers. The constituency has large number of slums in Mankhurd, Govandi and Deonar. The seat is divided into pockets of Gujarati, Muslim and Dalit population, along with sizeable Marathi voters.

I have seen Phatkar at work.

Mostly soothing words and little action to achieve anything.

In the NE Bombay, one RPI candidate put into the contest and it will upset her apple cart.

I have worked with Dalits and they are very politically oriented towards their own.

Have you not seen the Khobargade incident?
