BANGALORE: The BJP on Tuesday said it would review the Aadhaar programme if it comes to power at the Centre and demanded a CBI probe into the scheme, alleging it regularized illegal stay of migrants in India.

Questioning the UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani's claims on Aadhaar's achievements, BJP national spokeswoman Meenakshi Lekhi termed the programme as a "fraud" perpetrated on the people of the country while seeking the probe.

"This is a dangerous programme to regularize the illegal stay of migrants in the country. Is Bharat Mata so open to illegal migrants? The Aadhaar is also in contravention of Supreme Court directives. The entire biometric data of people enrolled has been stored outside the country," she said during an interaction with students here.

Fielding questions from students hailing from West Bengal and Bihar on Bangladeshi migrants, BJP general secretary HN Ananth Kumar, who is facing Nilekani in Bangalore South parliamentary constituency, said: "If you illegally enter other countries, you are shot at or put in jail. But if anyone illegally enters India, he is given citizenship. This is the contribution of Aadhaar. Half of Assam is occupied by Bangladeshis. Aadhaar is the biggest fraud in the country."

Meenakshi claimed there are over three crore illegal Bangladeshi immigrants spread across the country and allotting Aadhaar numbers to them posed a huge security risk to the nation. "Of 33 members in a parliamentary standing committee, 31 had voted against implementing Aadhaar programme. The apex court too had questioned its credibility. Yet the government went ahead with it," she said.

Short of naming Nilekani, Meenakshi also questioned the expenditure incurred on Aadhaar. "A thorough CBI probe is needed on the money spent and why Aadhaar was made mandatory," she said.

I wish they linked gas subsidies to EPIC instead of Aadhar. Then the voter turnout would have grown by leaps, and votebank politics would be crushed. It would also mean no subsidies for immigrants. Tough shit.

CONGRESS also used it to increase his vote bank by giving aadhar to 500 million bangladeshis.(also give them right to vote)
this was also one of the reasons behind assam riots.

I dont know what the fuss is all about ..... its clearly mentioned on the card that, the Adhar card is by no means proof of citizenship. Its just a way to get 1.3 billion people to give their finger prints and retinal scans to the govt. In a country where we are under policed and short on manpower to man the police station, its an easy way to identify people. What is the Police supposed to do if a Bangladeshi or a Nepali citizen commits a crime/ or is a victim of a crime in India ? are u suggesting that he/she should go scot-free? Its a good policy to have everyone residing in the country on your data base for effective policing, is it not?

AAdhar can be improved and strengthened

Aadhar is an easy way of increasing BANK accounts in the country

Other wise people will fritter away savings or keep them with money lenders

In Aadhar at least we have Retina scans and Finger prints in the database

There is no need to scrap or cancel Aadhar altogether

Remove all illegal immigrants from the database

The BIGGER problem is that illegal immigrants are able to procure ration cards
Voter ID cards ; driving licences and even PAN cards

    Why just blame Aadhar

A national database for cross-checking stuff may not be a bad idea for flagging anti-national elements while still being politically correct.

IIRC mentioning bank account isn't mandatory in the Aadhar enrollment form. It is optional to either allow creation of a new bank account or to share existing account details and can be skipped. So is the choice of sharing your details with other public welfare services.

Someone please remind me which Indian company got the contract for Adhar... Infy or Wipro or TCS?

Has the stock market discounted potential losses out of cancellation of this program, in case that extreme step is taken. Its a billion dolla contract if I remember correctly just to start with. annual MC will run into 100's of millions.
