80% of Pakistanis say country is headed in wrong direction

October 14, 2011

A startlingly small number of Pakistanis think the country is headed in the right direction, according to the results of a recent Gilani Poll conducted by Gallup Pakistan.

In a survey, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked the following question:

In your opinion is our country going in the right or wrong direction?

The poll results revealed that only 18% Pakistanis think the country is headed in the right direction. 80% responded by saying that the country is headed in the wrong direction, while 2% did not maintain either view.

Ironically, the percentage that voted "right direction" is even lower in America where in a comparable survey, only 13% believed their country was headed in the right direction. A majority (85%) Americans believed their country is headed in the wrong direction.

The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International.

The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2,666 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, from September 2 – September 08, 2011.

The error margin is estimated to be approximately + 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.

Let me guess the 80% want secularism and equality... Nope that is not it. The idiots in America think, that Paki 'right direction' is same as theirs, and therefore better than the current Pakistani course. What complete fools at Gallup.

What a vague question and what a misleading headline this is. No one defined what is the right or wrong direction. so if 80% say they are heading in wrong direction, it could well mean they are heading for secular governance, or their alliance with the US. Etc. So the 80% people might actually be a problem for the rest of the world as Rhys might be thinking Pakistan is not too Islamic enough? Not too Talibanized enough.
