The ancient Buddhist site of Nalanda was the world's first international, residential university. At its peak it hosted thousands of students from across the known world, from Greece and Persia to China and Japan. Nalanda stands today as a testament to the universalism and all-inclusiveness of Indian civilization, and the great prestige that Indian education once enjoyed.

What about Takshashila university, from where Panini graduated? Does´nt that count?
I think Takshashila was not included in this series because it only includes monuments located within modern-day India, and Takshasila is in modern-day Pakistan. But yes Takshshila was also an important center of higher learning, along with others such as Vikramashila, Rajgir, and Nagarjunakonda (in South). Of all of these centers, however, Nalanda is the most illustrious and internationally-renown with the most impressive ruins, which is why it is considered a Wonder.
