CUTTACK, ODISHA: 61 infants have died at a children's hospital in Cuttack in Odisha in just two weeks, sparking protests and forcing the state government of Naveen Patnaik to launch an investigation.

A criminal probe was under way into the conduct of three staff at the Shishu Bhawan or Children's Home in Cuttack, state health minister Atanu S Nayak said on Wednesday. Five workers have been suspended.

"A preliminary inquiry found (the staff) had neglected their duty that contributed to the deaths," Health Minister Nayak said, without elaborating on the causes of death. Doctors at the hospital blamed the deaths on overstretched facilities, not negligence.

The opposition, including the BJP, staged protests outside several government hospitals across Odisha. "Infants have died but the Chief Minister has yet to visit the hospital," said Samir Mohanty, one of the BJP protesters.

The deaths highlight the challenges faced in an underfunded public health system beleaguered by an acute shortage of staff and clinics.

Niranjan Mohanty, a senior official at the hospital, said it was overburdened, admitting up to 50 critically ill children and treating up to 500 outpatients daily.

    Poor babies, RIP.
Medical care in India is much better than neighboring countries.
    This should not have happened.

all i could say is, where/when laws/law-upholders are lax, such tragedies are bound to follow. death for crimes like neglect of duty (like in critical services as in the above), food-adulteration, etc. as well as ensuring severe repercussions for those hand-in-gloves with the culprits (like, among the govt. servants), and we may THEN perhaps expect lesser such occurrences.

may the souls of the babies find some solace. _/\_

The sad part is that there is no opposition force in Odisha to speak off.BJD is probably going to rule the state for eternity.:(

Put that "staff" under jail and neglect them without care/food etc for few weeks so they learn.

    Jail the seniors as well.

no child should be neglected. there punishment should be to endure the conditions the babies were under. that will teach them.
