US satellites join Isro in search of missing chopper

While the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) pressed into service an aircraft of the National Remote Sensing Agency to search for the helicopter carrying the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, the state government on Wednesday requisitioned the services of US satellites to track the Nallamala forest ranges — about 250 km from Hyderabad.

The Bell 430 helicopter with five persons on board went missing while it was possibly flying over the forest ranges.

Though the ISRO satellites would start tracking the helicopter from Thursday morning, the United States can do the job much faster because it has a larger number of satellites in space.

“Normally, a satellite takes two to four days to return to a specific location on earth. The US, with a large number of satellites, can locate a specific area on the earth faster than us," said K. Kasturirangan, former ISRO chief.

Kasturirangan, however, clarified that the resolution of Indian and US satellites are more or less the same and are capable of tracking a missing helicopter. US and Indian satellites have a resolution of 65 to 80 centimetres. This means they are able to clearly see anything the size a lunch box.

ISRO Director-Satellite Centre T.K. Alex told the Hindustan Times: "We have a radar imaging satellite that can take pictures even when there are clouds or at night.”

"The satellite is circling the earth 550 km above the earth and is somewhere in the area. It will be commanded to come around and click photographs of the approximate area where the helicopter could probably be," he said.

According to the guidelines of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, helicopters are required to carry an emergency locator transmitter, which sends signals all around automatically after encountering very heavy jerks. These signals are picked up by satellites to locate the helicopters.

“If the helicopter had been carrying this equipment and it had crashed, we would have got the signal. But we've not picked up any signal so far,” Alex said.

I know remote sensing is being done. Other news is snaps will be available only tomorrow morning as satellite will be passing over then.

You are right why isn't RISAT being used ??
Even the RAWs secretive Gulfstream IV has joined the hunt. RISAT probably is not around India.

Sigh.. If only they had spent half this effort in annihilating Naxals and corruption..

The Naxals will not be eradicated because they serve the interests of a section of our polity- or rather a segment of this chaotic bawdy house we call our democracy. They survive only and purely at our pleasure.

I have that on good accord.

But....that is for another time and another thread :d_training:

Andhra Pradesh CM dead in chopper crash
TNN 3 September 2009, 10:50am IST

NEW DELHI: Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy has died in an air crash, the Prime Minister’s Office said on Thursday.

The bodies of 60-year-old Reddy, who led his Congress party to a spectacular second consecutive victory in the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, and his Special Secretary P Subramanyam, chief security officer A S C Wesley, pilot Group Captain S K Bhatia and co-pilot M S Reddy were found on Rudrakonda Hill, 40 nautical miles east of here, besides the mangled remains of the helicopter.

Highly placed Congress sources in Delhi said that the bodies have been found and an official statement is expected shortly.

The Union Cabinet is meeting to discuss the matter.

Andhra Pradesh finance minister K Rosaiah has been appointed caretaker CM.

The helicopter carrying YSR Reddy, two of his staff and two pilots went missing in pouring rain Wednesday morning over the Naxal and tiger-infested Nalamalla forests.

Nearly 24 hours after YSR's chopper went missing, it was located atop Serai Salem hill, at a distance 40 nautical miles (70 kms) east of Kurnool.

The CM left Hyderabad on a six-seater Bell chopper at 8.35am for Chittoor accompanied by his secretary and chief security officer. After 9.27am, radio contact was lost with the helicopter.

Soon after the chopper lost contact, multiple agencies of the state launched a massive hunt for possible wreckage in the desolate terrain. By evening, it expanded into the country's biggest-ever search operation with satellites in the sky joining remote sensing aircraft, fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles, troops on the ground and even barefoot deer-hunting tribals with bows and arrows.

Another shame to the country where head of a state killed by a sub-standard machine. A lesson learned, we need human lives to learn our lessons. Pathetic.

RIP.
