Mathura clash toll reaches 4, curfew clamped

LUCKNOW: Patrolling was intensified in the curfew-bound Kosi Kalan locality of Mathura on Saturday, a day after two of the dozen people injured in Friday's clashes succumbed to injuries at the Mathura district hospital. What started as an altercation between two groups over use of water in a drum placed outside a mosque took a violent turn following rumours of a communal flare up. Two people were killed in the clashes on Friday.

Senior Samajwadi Party leaders, including chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, party president Mulayam Singh Yadav and PWD minister Shivpal Yadav and minister for parliamentary affairs and urban development Mohd Azam Khan met on Saturday to discuss the Mathura violence. Azam Khan was asked to oversee and help authorities defuse the situation.

Trouble began around 2.00pm on Friday in Sarai Shahi area where a passerby dipped his hands in the drum, leading to a heated exchange with some locals. The passerby explained he didn't know it was drinking water because the drum wasn't covered nor was there any sign.

But the situation turned violent when others in the locality gathered at the spot and thrashed the man and some others who had come to his rescue. Soon rumours spread and traders in Subhash Bazar, Sarai Shahi and Bajaja markets downed their shutters, adding to the panic.

Within hours, tension gripped the temple city, as activists from the two faiths gathered outside their respective localities.

By the time cops landed up, reports of brick-batting, arson and firing between two communities began to pour in from different parts of the city and mobs torched kiosks at the fruit market near the highway. There was violence in Gurushganj, Baldeoganj and Batasha Bazaar where mobs set ablaze a dozen motorcycles and four wheelers, two furniture stores and shops in Ghanta Ghar Bazaar and Batasha Bazaar area. The situation was brought under the control after curfew was imposed.

The chief minister also directed the additional director general of police (ADG) Law & Order Jagmohan Yadav to camp in Mathura and personally supervise the police action in the trouble-hit areas.

The ADG flew down to Mathura shortly thereafter, took a first hand stock of the situation and described the situation as completely under control. Talking to TOI, the ADG said, "There is clear evidence of mischief by some local individuals who have triggered panic by describing a group clash as communal violence shortly after it began. This prompted local residents from the adjoining areas to take sides on communal lines and the situation slipped out of hands faster, leaving the police with no option, but to impose curfew in some specific pockets of Kosi Kalan area."

    3 Sides to a story

While chief minister Akhilesh Singh Yadav was showering sops setting aside over Rs 2,000 crore for the welfare of minorities, Samajwadi Party district president Govind Singh was allegedly teaming up with Bahujan Samaj Party leader Chaudhry Laxmi Narain Singh, leading a Jat fury on Muslims in Kosi Kalan, a township in Mathura district on Delhi-Agra highway, 100 kms form Delhi.

Khalid Ali, an eyewitness told DNA that the incident startedwhen a Jat shopkeeper after attending nature’s call, washed hands in a tubcontaining water for Muslims, preparing for prayers.

What do you mean Voting by communal line? Wake-Up, Election is over!!

I am not sure about exact story as every media has it's own narration. However, Retaliation (If it was) Led by Samajwadi Party district president Govind Singh was allegedly teaming up with Bahujan Samaj Party leader Chaudhry Laxmi Narain Singh Then it would be Secular Riot.

there has many things to do to prevent communal violence in our country.
But i don't like when a pakistani national gives us advise on this matter.
The country is full of violance does not have moral rights to say anything about it.
    First restore your house.

i don't know why you said it's jaat vs muslims when the place is flooded with jadon rajputs and brahmins.

yeah a relative of mine phoned me to tell this news and i didn't believed him becaz it was not on news channel.i guess he was right.
i have been to mathura and visited nearly all villages like kosi, chata, vrindavan, people are very backward in those area.they are full of superstitions and hindu/muslims divide is higher there..........

Dont view this one incident in isolation...as one report said, the embers were already burning and this was just the petrol needed for mass-combustion...good that it has subsided now...

truth is, aside from all the pappi jhappi in the online world. hindu-muslim divide is very real on the ground, atleast on the mental level if not physically, especially in north india....and increasingly in kerala and northern AP...
