23,600 Bangladeshis deported from India in last 3 years

NEW DELHI: 23,600 Bangladeshi nationals have been deported in the last three years while over 83,400 people from the country, claiming to be refugees, are living in India.

Replying to a question in Lok Sabha, minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur said a total of 23,653 Bangladeshi citizens have been deported from 2009 to 2011.Giving year-wise break up, she said a maximum of 10,602 Bangladeshi nationals were deported in 2009 while the numbers for 2010 and 2011 were 6,290 and 6,761 respectively.

She said that as on December 31, 2011, a total of 67,945 nationals from over 40 countries were found to be overstaying in India who include 13,744 from Afghanistan and 8,037 from Pakistan.Kaur said a total of 2,168 nationals from the US, 2038 from Iraq and 1,094 people from the UK were also found to be overstaying in India.Answering a separate question, she said a total of 83,484 Bangladesh nationals have been living in India, claiming to be refugees.

Asked whether these people were given Adhaar numbers, Kaur did not give a direct reply but said Unique Identification Authority of India has been mandated to generate and issue a 12 digit unique identification number to all residents of India."Adhaar is not a citizen identity card. It does not confer citizenship nor does it, by itself, confer right of citizenship," she said.

Please note the evasiveness regarding the UID cards. Even PC had a problem with issuing the card to all residents of India as opposed to citizens of India. Why do the illegal migrants need the Aadhar card?

PC was over ruled by Madad and her Jholawal brigade because as we all know that this card will slowly cover all the gamut of services from ration card to driving licence to replacing the pan card. If this is not going to be a symbol of Indian citizenship then what else is it for.m the design are very clear vote bank politics is more important than the security of the nation.

In Assam and elsewhere it is not that difficult to detect the illegals who have acquired land.

All those who have usurped Govt and village land are illegals.

Those who have become petty traders and have mingled in urban areas are the one who can escape detection.

Maybe the reason was simply that it is impossible to establish the identity of a Muslim Bengali from a Muslim Bangladeshi? Isn't that one of the prime reasons for rolling out the UID's in the first place, so that this distinction can be made in the future?

For the first batch of UID recipients though, are you going to deny a poor family of Muslim labourers the UID because they are unable to furnish documentary proof of their Indian citizenship? Then they won't be the only ones affected, there will be millions of tribals, Adivasis, and other poor non-Muslim landless migrant workers who will also be affected.

At the bottom of the economic ladder, the state is often completely absent. The shortcomings of the state or the presence of 10 million illegal Bangladeshis should not be a reason to deny UID's to hundreds of millions of poverty stricken Indians.

Precisely that is the point if you are not going make a distinction between a citizen of India and an illegal immigrant then might as well get over the farce and give citizenship to all residents. Why go through the farce of UID. Chidambaram had objected to the UID on this point. He felt that the home Ministry was better placed to do this exercise because they had the data and also the manpower to ensure that the UID cards were given to the citizens of India.

Knowing our politicians thousands and thousands of illegal immigrants will be made citizens of our country for simple vote bank politics and we have seen the effect in Assam.
