Police on Sunday arrested a 21-year-old girl for questioning the total shutdown in the city for Bal Thackeray's funeral on her Facebook account.

Another girl who 'liked' the comment was also arrested.

The duo were booked under Section 295 (a) of the IPC (for hurting religious sentiments ) and Section 64 (a) of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Though the girl withdrew her comment and apologised, a mob of some 2,000 Shiv Sena workers attacked and ransacked her uncle's orthopaedic clinic at Palghar.

"Her comment said people like Thackeray are born and die daily and one should not observe a bandh for that," said PI Uttam Sonawane.

Of course, the arrest is unconstitutional. It seems Mumbai police have become sycophants of BT and threw all rules in the dustbin. And the thing is no one has been arrested for ransacking her uncle's property. :puke:

    1) Where is the freedom of speech
    2) There was a state funeral accorded to a leading politician of the state. How did it hurt the religious sentiments?
    3) Increasingly online community is targetted from all over. The UPA govt goes after thise against it, and now this.

We might as well declare a dictatorship and gag all forms of free speech like China.

I can give link to at least 50 other Facebook/twitter posters who made similar or even rude comment. Let's see if Police has balls to fill jails.

Police is freely using discretionary power, not too long before it will be withdrawn.

Can you point out what law? What I'd Sibals law? Is he the new ruler of the country?
Last I heard we were still a democracy.

What job is the police doing? Did they arrest those who vandalized the clinic?

This is not about any post made against any person. It's basic freedom of speech. Lots of posts were made on Facebook and twitter rejecting the close down etc. What's in it that hurt "religious sentiments"?

Intolerance all round is on the rise. Even from a govt that is supposedly secular and liberal in Delhi.

The government is scared and probably overestimates his "strength". They probably think he is a "Bal Thackarey" of Hyderabad ( sorry that's a big insult to Bal Thanckarey as he was a patriot but that probably is the government thinking ) and thinks he will get millions on the street.

And what wrong has the girl said? I would have not agreed with her if she had shown disrespect to Bal Thackare, which she has absolutely not, and even then there would have been absolutely no need to arrest anyone what so ever. On the contrary, BT said so many things which were provocative and incited hate for other religious groups, communities, should he then have not been in the jail permanently?

Same happened with Aseem Trivedi, the guy mocked the corruption through a cartoon, the only mistake, the poor chap was mocking the politicians and the police arrest the chap.

Do we want to become a more intolerant society?

49 guests in the thread. Be careful about what we speak I guess. We don't know who is among the guests and these days they can use any law or make new ones to silence any questions or criticism.
