287,000 commit suicide in China each year

BEIJING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- About 287,000 people commit suicide each year in China, accounting for 3.6 percent of the country's annual deaths, according to official statistics.

Seventy-five percent of suicide cases occur in rural areas, three times the number of suicides committed in cities, according to statistics posted on the website of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

"China's suicide rate reflects a trend that is different from other countries," said an article posted on the website.

Females are about 25 percent more likely to commit suicide than males in China, while in developed countries, male suicide rates are three times higher than female suicide rates, according to the article.

A joint survey conducted by the Chinese CDC and the Beijing-based Huilongguan Hospital ranks suicide as China's fifth leading cause of death overall and the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 15 and 34.

About two million Chinese citizens attempt suicide each year, a figure which has increased by 60 percent over the past 50 years, according to the CDC.

The high-profile suicides of government officials and business tycoons have aroused public attention in recent years. At least eight government officials at various levels succeeded in committing suicide last year.

One of this year's most prominent cases was the death of Zhang Haizhong, director of Hanshan District of the city of Handan in north China's Hebei Province. Zhang was found dead in his office on July 10; his death was investigated and ruled as a suicide.

Two million Chinese attempt suicide every year: Report

BEIJING: China has one of the highest suicide rates in the world with a person trying to kill himself every two minutes, even as the country propels itself to emerge as one of the richest nations.

Two million Chinese attempt suicide every year constituting 3.6 per cent of the total deaths annually, according to an official study.

Though most of them are saved, still nearly 300,000 people kill themselves every year in a population of 1.3 billion, a survey by Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.

As China marked world suicide prevention day on Saturday, the centre said the highest rate of suicide was among the age group 15-34.

Seventy-five per cent of the suicides were reportedly committed in rural areas and the number of suicides by women is 25 per cent higher than males, which is contrary to the trend seen in developed countries where the suicide rate among males is three times more, CDC said.

The survey ranked suicide as the fifth leading cause of death and a primary reason for death of people aged between 15 to 34 years in China, Xinhua reported.

The study was released ahead of the World Suicide Prevention Day on 9 September.

China's suicide rate 'among highest in world'

A person tries to kill themselves in China every two minutes, the government and state media said Thursday, giving the country one of the highest suicide rates in the world. China's suicide rate is 22.23 people out of every 100,000, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said on

"Our nation has one of the highest rates of suicide in the world," the Beijing Youth Daily quoted Beijing Health Bureau spokesman Mao Yu as saying.

About 287,000 people kill themselves in the country of 1.3 billion every year, while about two million try to commit suicide annually.

China marks World Suicide Prevention Day on Saturday, according to the Beijing Youth Daily.

The disease control centre said suicide is the biggest killer among Chinese aged 15 to 34.

Extreme pressure to perform well at school and to find employment were the main reasons behind the high rate of suicide among China's youths, media said.

The suicide rate in rural areas is three times higher than in urban centres and accounts for 75 percent of China's suicide total, it said.

According to the Guangzhou Daily, the number of suicides in China has risen sharply during the reform and open period, when the nation's economy has boomed.

A person attempts to commit suicide in China every two minutes, the paper said.

In 2009, the British medical journal The Lancet identified Lithuania, Finland, Latvia, Hungary, China, Japan and Kazakhstan as all having exceptionally high rates of suicide, 20 per 100,000 people or higher.

Its very sad, a lot of pressure because of this modern life style and demand to get money that many people caught up in the pressure commit suicide rather than face humiliation of not haveing succeeded!

Tragic, i hope China does something.

This is a byproduct of the concept of "face" in East Asian society.

Face (sociological concept)

Even countries like Japan are caught up with this problem

Wow that's a huge number. Too much competition or too much pressure at work place or plain overall unhappiness might be the reasons for such mass suicide rates. And why suicide rates among women higher than in men going against the trend observed in the world. Any specific reasons?.

Yup, there Govts don't provide 2 Rs rice, free TV, Mixers, grinders, fans, Laptops, free cows, free goats. They don't even have NREGA. Poor chaps should learn from us, how not to be driven to suicide because of hard work.

Damn only 200,000 die of the 2,000,000 who attempt? Thats a very bad conversion rate. Chinese pride themselves on efficiency in whatever they do!!

Seriously though, it says a lot about the underlying pressures that people face in developing countries and big ones like China and India where income disparity is quite high, plus social pressures etc.

The number of suicides in only going to increase in China. "Loss of face" is considered a very grave offense in Chinese/East Asian cultures.

Just look at Japan or Korea, developed countries, but their suicide figures are through the roof !

On a serious note, Sonia ji is not a minister. Second her age is well past production capability. And even if she could, who would do "it" :)

let us not forget two million is what the official chinese media is saying, and coming from a regime that very closely guards its dirty little secrets, there is no reason to believe those would be the actual numbers, which very well could be many times over than being reported.

some truly depressed souls there.
