PATNA: Eleven children have died and several others taken ill after eating infected midday meal at a government school in Saran district.

The incident took place in Dharamsati primary school in Masrakh in Saran.

According to reports, over 50 children, all in the age group of 8 to 12 years, were taken ill after consuming khichdi, offered to them in midday meal.

The children fell ill soon after eating the meal, which consisted of rice, pulse and soyabean, police said.

They were rushed to Chhapra sadar hospital where 11 of them were declared dead on arrival. The others are undergoing treatment, police said.

Following the incident, chief minister Nitish Kumar has called an emergency meeting to discuss the situation. The chief minister has also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the family of children who died. Of this, Rs 1.5 lakh is from the disaster management fund and Rs 50,000 from CM's relief fund.

Angry over the deaths, hundreds of people took to the streets in protest and surrounded the local police station demanding action against school teachers and officials responsible.

Meanwhile, forensic team has been rushed to the spot to take sample of the contaminated food and probe the incident.

Chhapra falls in the Lok Sabha constituency of RJD president Lalu Prasad.

    These schemes are noble.

However,Govts are only interested in populism for votes and have no desire to monitor since their own folks and the Party are making a killing!

Looks like Botulism Toxin, not sure :notsure: but generally sudden death after taking meal is associated with it.

Mid Day Meal is a big failure, if you can't build a proper school, how can you give children proper food. There're many programs which are very much useless, waste of money. Best program is RNTCP(revised), I'm not sure but it may be world's best program implemented ever. PHCs , CHCs are again failure, MCI should start some diploma courses or family health course especially for rural areas and also rural surgery course. DNB has such courses but NBE itself is a mess, nobody takes them, seats always get collapsed.

Who really bothers about the media?

They are paid up hacks in any case.

There are enough ways to keep them and their editors and owners in line!

Money talks and our media is available for sale !

Similarly the day after Yeddyurappa resigned from BJP several corruption cases against him were dropped the next day. This is corruption at the highest level.

I hope Dhongress party is punished by the people, 55 years of ruling this country have turned them into greedy monsters.

The article says people demanded arrest of school teachers? Are these people crazy? What has school teachers to do with the mid-day meals? It is the administration to blame who contracted this scheme to the highest bidder in exchange for the biggest bribe and lowest quality for little children.....Better outsource it to organizations with modern kitchens with ISO certificates such as ISKCON etc. or else give thee poor children packed food such as glucose biscuits!

In past 10 years, primary education has gone out for a toss in this nation, however quotas and community specific schemes by the corrupt Delhi Durbar have gone up!

P.S: Poor man's life has no value in this nation heck even common man has no value.....Only people who command value are Nehru/Gandhi/Vadras, politicians, media-men, corporates, babus and their relatives (coterie)!

ISKON ?? That would be communal...
I have seen a program on discovery that how ISKON gives good food to prisoners of Bangaluru's jail. Even prisoners don't want to go out from prison because of food and good activities done in prison. Many prisoners say we can't get such food even at our home.
Religion can play a good role here. Prepare the food in the name of god, have donations in the name of God for such schemes and even buy raw material from good companies in the name of god lol. I bet owners of many companies are believing in ISKON or other religious organizations like BAPS and willingly give good raw material on discounted price.... ;) God is Great.... :)

The Mid day meal is a great thing.

However, the implementation is faulty where everyone wants to make a quick buck.

And political affiliations ensures snapping up the largesse and misusing it.

No matter who is in govt, nothing apparently will change.

It is now becoming our birthright to suffer in silence and die!

Yes Sir. However after this incident (one more incident reported in Maharashtra ) , all political parties were busy in passing the buck and want to score political brownie point again respective opponent. However none of them want to speak on the problem regarding implementation, Corruption with this program etc. And we all know that child malnutrition statistics of our nation are really bad. But Political class seems not united to fight against this menace.

Actually, I have been thinking over this.

I put myself in the shoe of the PM and the CMs.

    Our intentions are good.

But can we change ourselves? - yes, us.

If the total corruption that has been ingrained in the Indian psyche over the years is there to stay, can anyone, no matter how noble maybe the intention, change anything?

It is not only the fault of the politicians, it is all US!

The only way out is to catch the crook, even if he is your own brother, who got the contract to supply using your name, and send him to jail for a very long time, then and then alone can be bring in some morality and honesty.

    But will that happen?

Ask Bansal or even Sonia Gandhi.

This is just sad. And the worst part is, no lessons would be learnt and the children would still be at the mercy of the monsters who are messing up these schemes. This is nothing short of murder.

Actually, common citizen wants to get rid of this corruption. But when bureaucracy and government institute are satiated in corruption then practically what common man can do. He is being also obliged to part of that kind of culture. Just recently there was one program on news channel regarding bribe culture in INDIA. And it say that we Indian giving 2 time more money than 2G Scam money just in bribe. And biggest beneficiary is police then other government institute comes in picture.

    Bribe trend by department

    Video of that debate.

IMHO, though this police officer and government people also come from same society as we live in but at least at government level, we must curb this kind of practice. So that common people can start avoid this kind of bribe culture.

    NGO quits Bihar scheme

Patna, July 17: Thousands of students in 1,650-odd primary schools in Patna, Vaishali, Nalanda, Begusarai and Gaya will not get their midday meal from tomorrow.

Delhi-based non-government organisation Ekta Shanti Foundation today withdrew its operations in the five districts. The organisation does not operate in Saran district, where 22 children have died after eating at school.

Rajnikant Pathak, the vice-president of Ekta Shanti Foundation, said the move to withdraw the services was a “precautionary” measure.

“We have taken the decision because the condition of the MDM scheme in Bihar has become very risky after the Saran incident. We have been informed that similar incidents have been reported in Madhubani and Gaya as well. We apprehend that there might be some political conspiracy going on in the midday meal sector in Bihar that might damage our reputation in other states,” said Pathak.

Ekta Foundation is involved with midday meals in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. In all five Bihar districts, they had centralised kitchen from where they served schools, Pathak said.

The midday meal cell in Vaishali today re-issued a circular first sent out in 2012 asking schools to get the food tasted by the principals and members of the Vidyalaya Shiksha Samiti before serving it to the children.
