Prithvi II ballistic missile successfully test fired

India on Thursday test-fired its nuclear-capable Prithvi-II ballistic missile with a strike range of 350 km from a test range near Balasore as part of a user trial by the army.

"The flight test of the surface-to-surface missile was conducted at around 0907 hrs from a mobile launcher from Integrated Test Range's launch complex-III at Chandipur," defence sources said.

The state-of-the-art Prithvi is the first ballistic missile developed under the country's prestigious Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme and has the capability to carry 500 kg of both nuclear and conventional warheads with a strike range of 350 km, they said.

The missile uses advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory. The test-fire of the sophisticated short-range ballistic missile, which has already been inducted into the armed forces, was a user trial by the army and monitored by scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation.

The sleek missile is handled by the strategic force command, a defence scientist said, adding the trial was conducted to gauge the effectiveness of the weapon in a real time situation.

"The whole exercise was aimed at studying the control and guidance system of the missile besides providing training to the army," said an official.

The missile is 9 metre-long and one metre in diameter with liquid propulsion twin engine. A defence scientist associated with the trial said radars and electro-optical systems located along the coast tracked and monitored all the parameters of the missile throughout the flight path.

Prithvi-II has been successfully flight tested several times as part of the training exercise and the last trial was a complete success on August 25, 2012 as it reached the predefined target in the Bay of Bengal with a very high accuracy of better than 10 meters, they said.

Isn't this missile already operational, so how come user trails are happening now?

User trials will keep happening from time to time to check oneself for the war readiness. Sometimes, the missiles which are at their fag end of their life are tested for practice by the Army. It increases the confidence in the missile as well as keeps a check on the readiness of the user.

yeah and the developer (DRDO) also use this opportunity to test new systems for A4,5 and all other future missile on cheap Prithvi missile. Every new system is tested on this missile before testing on Agni series, as this would mean that only prithvi missile which we have lots, will be used and it cost us much less as compare to Agni missile. Plus with already 75-80 test completed on this missile we know how it will behave in fight with new sub systems.

Right
We can have a sticky for all the user trails. This is going to be a common practise as we have mature few platforms to their perfection.

User trials are different from the launches you are talking about. User trials are trials by the user of the missile to determine if they are satisfactory or not. Atleast it is so in case of all other systems. Dunno if it is different in case of missiles.

The missile is operational .. not stagnant. The user's requirement is bound to change and so is the missile.
User trials and other tests are interlinked.

Getting rid of missiles which are nearing their expiry date.

India test-fired its home grown nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Prithvi-II missile from a military base in Odisha, officials said.

The indigenously-developed ballistic missile with a range of 350 km was fired from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur-on-sea in Balasore district, about 230 km from Bhubaneswar. The launch was carried out by the Indian armed forces, as part of regular training exercise, officials said.
