Tiruchirapalli (TN): A hypersonic version of Brahmos missile that can fly at Mach 7 (seven times speed of sound) is being evaluated and companies in India and Russia are working overtime to design and develop various components for it. "For this version, a new engine has to be developed, as also new materials to withstand high temperature and vibrations.




They have got to be on board with supportive electronic systems. Numerous industries in Russia and India are involved in design and development of components and sub systems," Dr A Sivathanu Pillai, CEO and MD of BrahMos Aerospace told PTI.


He said the Indian Institute of Science and Moscow Aviation Institute would be involved in Research and Development of critical components for the hypersonic version. However, details on bilateral investment and financing the project is yet to be arrived at, Pillai said. He said integration of Brahmos into Sukoi-30MK-I is very much in progress with aircraft structural modification going on at HAL.




Trial flights, along with missile testing would hopefully begin by January 2012, he said and expressed confidence the air version would be commissioned by that year. He said Brahmos Aerospace has augmented production at all three of manufacturing centres in Hyderabad, Pilani and Thiruvanathanpuram to cater to the substantial orders received from the Armed forces.




Pillai said they would soon bring out revised missile versions with fresh Seeker heads with precision delivery. Presently, 20 major industries and 20 plus small and medium enterprises across India are involved in producing various components and accessories for BrahMos missile project.


BrahMos is a stealth supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land. It is a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation and Russia's NPO Mashinostroeyenia who have together formed BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited. (PTI)

India, Russia to develop hypersonic BrahMos missile: Pillai

India and Russia are working on a hypersonic cruise missile BrahMos based on stealth technologies, surpassing the speed of sound by nearly seven times. BrahMos Aerospace CEO Sivathanu Pillai told Interfax on 10th Oct that Indian and Russian specialists from a number of companies are working on this super-modern project, to be completed in five to six years.

The work has begun. The missile needs a new engine, new materials to withstand high temperatures and vibration and appropriate electronic systems, said Pillai.

He said an agreement was signed in August between BrahMos Aerospace, the Moscow Aviation Institute and the Indian Institute of Science to set up a center of advanced technologies in high-speed aerodynamics.

The Moscow Aviation Institute and the Indian Institute of Science will design crucial elements of the new missile, the CEO added.

BrahMos Aerospace is working on other changes of the missile, and is expected to be installed in the fifth-generation fighter aircraft. This version may have structural changes as it will have to be fit inside the weapons bay. The supersonic missile BrahMos will become the most powerful weapon of the fifth-generation fighter aircraft of Russia and India in the Indian Air Force, he said.

India is using sea and land-based versions of BrahMos missiles. The submarine-based change will be tested at the end of this year.

The air-based change has been developed for Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighters. Pillai said the test launches of BrahMos missiles from Su-30MKI will begin in 2012.

Brahmos missiles is India’s first offensive tactical missile deployment against China.


Pressing ahead with the second phase of military expansion along the China front, the government has given the go-ahead to deployment of Brahmos cruise missiles in Arunachal Pradesh. This will be India’s first offensive tactical missile deployment against China, sources said.

The three Brahmos missile regiments raised so far have been deployed in the western sector to counter the Pakistan threat. This will be the fourth regiment.

With a range of 290 km, these cruise missiles are being deployed to improve India’s military reach into the Tibet Autonomous Region and counter China’s elaborate missile deployment along the Sino-Indian border.

This, sources said, dovetails with India’s second expansion plan but is being fast-tracked because of urgency shown by the armed forces.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also cleared the five-year expansion plan for which he had given the green signal earlier. The plan involves fresh accretion of 89,000 troops, with 400 officers.

This is estimated to cost over Rs 65,000 crore, making it one of India’s biggest one-time military expansion effort. The proposal is now with the Finance Ministry, and will be put up before the Cabinet Committee on Security.

Linked to this, the CCS has decided to focus on security of Indian islands with the larger view of securing maritime routes criss-crossing the Indian Ocean.

Two Army brigades are also being lined up for the Andamans while a battalion-strength presence is being considered for Lakshadweep alongside the Navy. Air Force assets are also being increased in these island territories, the sources said.

The second Army expansion on the China border will include setting up a corps headquarter in Panagarh, West Bengal, along with two more divisions. An independent armoured brigade along with an artillery division will be part of the set-up.
