Adux, in South ruling class mostly been OBC or shudra. I will speak about Karnataka. Brahmin percentage 4-5%, mostly employed as village priests, school teachers and later on in govt service and professionals, very few in business [that would include the likes of Narayanamurthy and Nandan Nilekani]. The rich and powerful have traditionally been OBCs, never Brahmins. What prevents well-off sections of society from getting educated and/or working hard I have no idea and no sympathy. That includes OBCs and Muslims.
Brahmin percentage of population - Outlook magazine.
It appears you have no idea whatsoever of a thing called "Society" and "Social structures". Is there a society anywhere on the Earth which does not have a social structures based on wide divisions? As per you, only 5 per cent are Brahmins. Does that mean the other 95 per cent are equals? Are all OBCs equals? Are all Shudras equals? All these have their Brahmins amongst them. Open your eyes !
Err, the OBC were suppressed for a long time. Take my community for instance. My father says that we were not allowed inside the temples not allowed to wear shirts in public places et al, not allowed to take water from the wells etc.
Frankly, if nopt for the reservation, the higher castes would still have dominated the society. Why do you think there are less no of incidents regarding the abuse of lower castes in South India, wrt North India? Its because of the reservation, which ensures the representation of the lower castes too into the system. there is reservation for all the communities who are of lower caste in the govt jobs(notsure though). This ensures that some one from particular community, say OBC/MBC/SC/ST in that field, school, college and so on and they make sure that the people from lower castes are not discriminated against. in these places. But the reservation is also the reason, now the people in south india are well represented even in the general quota now.
But in North, the higher castes dominated everything and everywhere, and they still hold all the important positions and they make sure that the lower castes are harassed when they come across them. I think reservation should be extended for the lower castes-.ie SC/ST in all govt institutions to prevent their abuses by higher castes and to uplift them.
But the place we can agree upon though is that, nowadays OBCs are not exploited/mistreated and so, may be the reservation can be relaxed for them...
But, there are other things, which make me sick and make me want the reservation to go on, like the attitude of the upper castes though. Thats entirely something else.
WTH is your point? He does have a point. Try answering his POINTs this time, rather than trying to justify what the higher castes ancestral pigs did long time back. And Dont give me the shit that lower castes were responsible for the caste system . Frankly, thats what makes me re-think my stance on reservation to think that, probably the upper castes deserve the shit they are facing now.
Historically OBCs were the ones holding power in most areas, never Brahmins. Caste discrimination though is bad and is a blot on Hindu religion, though replacing it with Brahmin hatred as in Tamil Nadu is not the solution. In modern age due to importance of literacy Brahmins and Baniya [trading community] had an advantage to begin with in that they were traditionally literate. Other groups are catching up.
In Karnataka, 60% of the land is owned by 2 communities classified as `backward`. In AP, Reddys, Kammas and Kapus are `backward` yet they are dominant/rich communities. Dont know about TN or Kerala.
^^^ You left out MBCs . But I will put that like this, the castist mentality in TN is MBCs> Dalits> Brahmins > OBCs. But comparison is subjective. For instance, there are still upper castes, who do, "Me a Brahmin, I am clean untouchable crap" . I can still ask the same question- Almost 90% of the marriages in india are arranged marriages. If the caste discriminations are not there, then why are we not seeing enough intercaste marriages. there must be a reason for that no?
But there are several communities in the TN which were indeed suppressed, if not to the extend of lower castes... Anyway, as I said, reservation for OBCs make no sense at all. They have to get over it.
It appears thaat you have no idea of what fair living is, there is something different from ancient western culture, ancient chinese culture and ancient indian culture, that difference is the bane called Casteism. You seem to think the other 95% were some independent entity, unfortunately it wasnt. Brahmins created the scriptures by which 'you are born into a societal division' and cannot ever fathom to get out of it, whoever good you are. They were crooked enough to give enough advantages to the higher caste aka the ruling class, for them to promote this endevour. All this made out from a religion told by a lower caste fishermen, yet when it came to, the fishermen class weren't good enough 'ever' to learn the scriptures or be 'brahmin'. Brahmins and higher caste to keep their hold with the land and people, colluded with the British and Islamist during various points, heck they were even responsible for the complete destruction of the Buddhist religion in India, which would have made this land mass a single entity and one of the most powerful empires in the world. The biggest shit ever to happen to India was Brahmin promoted Hinduism.
If the idiots over here can blame Congress Party and MMS for ills' of this nation of 60 years, then ofcourse Brahmins and higher caste deserves a far higher blaming in being traitors and sellin of this country, and subjugating their own people for slavery.
Can you blame 1% of population of TN for all the casteism ? Atrocities on SC-ST are committed by mainly OBCs not Brahmins. Speaking of inter caste marriages, how many Reddys married with Malas or Thevars with dalits and if not why not. Babasaheb Ambedkar carries the surname of his Brahmin school teacher who seeing the intelligence of the young boy asked him to change his surname to Ambedkar, Ambedkar's second wife [after death of first arranged maiirage wife], Narendra Jadhav himself a highly educated and accomplished Dalit wife is a Brahman. Brahmins have played a part in trying to eradicate caste system in many states. Other communities also need to come forward and make a difference.
The eradication part is a bit funny majority of brahmins still rue for their golden period .Those who tried to "eradicate" were made a pariah by the larger brahmin community like they did to Subramaniam Bharati. The Nambhoodris used to ask the lower caste to expose their breasts in the presence of Nambhoodri Brahmins. In TN the discrimination was unspeakable if not for PEriyar and Justice party majority of South India would have been backwards just like north india
